View Full Version : MX Composition Competition (Hosted by the Bass Forum)

A while back in the Pit there was a MIDI composition competition amongst MXers to see who could write the best song. It went strong for at least a year, with intermittant hiatuses, but as the Pit declined so did the competition. Alas, alas, all good things must come to an end.
Well, its come back, sorta. Since we don't have the Pit anymore to host this forum-wide event, we're going to do it in the bass forums, mainly because it was theJoZ's idea to bring them back, and he's a bassist. Plus, bassists are cooler. :p The point of this whole thing this time, as it was last time, is to see who can write the best song. This has absolutely nothing to do with playing ability, it just has to do with songwriting ability. To do that, all entries must be composed and written in MIDI format and NOT submitted as an audio file such as an MP3. You can do this in programs such as Powertab and Guitar Pro, where you write out the tab to a song you've written and then save it as a MIDI file. This is to even the playing field somewhat and prevent people who perhaps don't have as much technical ability as others to have a chance.
Sometimes the old competitions in the pit had general themes. I remember a couple like, "write a song about the night" or "write a song using only 'acoustic' instrument patches" or "write a song in three distinct 'movements'". This one, in order to bring as many people into the fray as possible, will just be open to any sort of style of music and length, barring any sort of progressive nightmares lasting more than 10 minutes. Anything under that is fine.
When you're done with your entry, join this yahoo group - http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/compcomps/ - and add it to the files section.
Good luck! Hf, gg, etc.

Sweet man, this should be stickied or something.
I want this to work like the last one, in that, after the entries are tallied, a voting thread will go up.
A short review of each piece should be written, and a score out of 10 given. Then the competitors are ranked in order, in order of score given.
The winner is the one with the highest overall points, and he or she will select the theme for the next comp. It can be a picture, an idea, anything (pictures work well hint hint).

Sounds sweet. I will probably try to make something.
EDIT: Deadline?
EDIT 2: So it has to be a tab program, and not a workstation like FL or Cubase?

So long as the file is a MIDI file, you can use whatever you want.

Yeah, thanks, I forgot about that clarifying factor for the voting thread. That was actually the best part, having individual, thorough critiques for each entry.
Also, if you entered and don't vote, you dont get to participate in the next competition.

Deadline?
How does next Wednesday sound? A week to come up with something and transcribe it out.

We can be a little looser with the deadline until we've generated enough interest. But yeah that's fair.

Mine's in. I actually wrote most of it before this competition, but in all, I wrote it in about a week's time, so I think that's fair. My jazz band played it, actually, debuting it at my class' graduation ceremony. For the purposes of this competition, I made several edits, such as realizing a bassline, drumline piano accompainment, flute solo and editing minor voicing snafus. Apologies in advance for the really lame drum solo fills.

If this competition is relatively entry light, I want the other bass forumers to vote on the entrants rather than the entrants, cause otherwise it's going to suck.
As far as mine goes, it's almost done, but needs a little more work. May be in tonight or tomorrow night, not sure.
Can the deadline be tomorrow evening, since I work late?

Yeah sure. Since this didn't get the interest that we were hoping for, we should leave the deadline open at least a couple days later.

Hey, awesome idea bringing this to the bass forum man.
I'll try get an entry in in the next couple days. I just came out of hospital so I'm full of time at the moment.

I had a bimaxillary osteotomy. In layman's terms, my bottom jaw stuck out like a neanderthal, so they smashed it up and moved it about. :D OK maybe an exaggeration but still, free cosmetic surgery right?
Just been doing some light research, I reckon I had a Le-Fort I osteotomy. I'm gonna spring that on my surgeon on Friday, see his face when I ask him.
Awesome, I've got someone else's blood inside me. It needs a blood transfusion to do the op. Five hours I was being fiddled with.

Hokay, mine is up. It's kinda prog, kinda metalcore, kinda...just check it out.
I do think that we need outside voters for this one, cause four voting for four entries isn't going to get us very far.
We definetly need to get some more composers up here too!
I'm working on one. But i've hit writers block majorly. I'm really proud of the beginning of my song...but thats all i have. Could i just submit it not expecting to win cause its really really short, but just for some feedback?
