My band (The Delta Rasa) tried out for the minnesota state fair variety show 2 days ago. The video's up on youtube. Honest feedback plz since if we get in we can still tweak our song and stuff. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uP0O5gKrLAE
I'm the bassist/singer btw.

Not bad, I couldn't hear your vocals so I can't comment on that sorry. I could hear the bass loud and clear(I know it's easier for a bassist to hear it) and it was pretty cool. I liked how the guitar solo wasn't a shred or speed based solo. It was a pretty good solo. The bass tapping was good also.
i guess the only thing I found to work on was maybe the vocals. Nice job.

THe tapped intro was cool but the slapping through out the song kinda got on my nerves. Sometimes it just needs to be mellow lol. Good song over all though.

ya i was thinkin about switching to a walk based on that same a c d progression during the solo cuz now that i've heard the full mix it seems a little distracting

overall i really liked you guys. the only thing i could really find off was the timing in some spots. sounded like either you were going too fast, or the drums were lagging behind in a few parts. it might just be me, though.
and you really should have smacked the person who was running sound for that thing. you can't quite hear the vocals. but from what i heard, you had good control over your voice.
how'd you guys do?

Not bad, sounded pretty good. I'm always impressed with people who can sing and play at the same time, though your playing did get a little sloppy when you were singing. Much better than I could do (singing and playing) but it seemed as if you were struggling a bit with it. I'd like to hear a good recording though, if you ever get one be sure to post it.
Overall I say good work. You guys rocked it and looked like you were actually having fun. The OX was the only one who could pull off standing still on stage, and I hate watching a band where everyone is just standing there, so that was good.

haha yeah the sound guy was an ***. he'd been doing auditions for like 10 days though so i didn't blame him. He only got the vox through the monitors and didn't bother to set up the rest right.
We don't find out for another 10 days if we got in or not. Kinda sucks but over 400 people auditioned so it makes sense.

You make quite a difference from most small bands who mostly just stand there looking bored. The song was pretty good as said before i can't really comment on the vocals but playing and singing at the same time is always quite impressive to see.
Overall a pretty good song could use some tweaking on the volume levels though

that slap line kinda got boring, and so did your drummer. You can only do double bass and hit the high hat for so long. lol.

nice EQ settings and use of reverb/delay
/isn't always sure how to distinguish the two

i really loved how the singing went with the music in the chorus... like ... really loved it.

I didn't like your tone. Too much treble. I usually don't like slap lines, no exception. Didn't like the tapping, either.
The singing was alright, and so was everything else.

I really liked the bass intro and groove. The vocals were pretty good. I though your drummer was really good. I wasn't impressed by the guitar though.

your singing reminds me of jack bruce. so, take that for what it is. :)
i'm not a fan of slapped lines/tapped lines. so, yea.
good luck on the results though.

It was a little rough around the edges, but it kind of depends what you were up against too. Generally I liked the tune, there were some issues with tightness during the vocals, but that's just practice. I think the bass needed way more bottom, that would have filled out the sound a lot. The best part was the little jam at the end, the drummer started getting into it with you, hooked up nicely.

Way too much slapping, and the drummer is too stagnant.
Stage presence wise, you seem to be fairly into it, which is good. Your guitarist should rock out more!

overall i think it was good, but slapping needs to be done in moderation or it takes away from the effect.. the groove you had going with the slap line was good though, even though it was kinda repetitive..
the guitar solo was a bit weak, but not bad.. he did a good job grooving with the bass though
the drums were a bit boring... it sounded more like a drum machine than a drummer..
overall though good job, good luck on the audition

it was too slappy. A good slap line busted out in a fingerstyle song always adds a good dynamic and gives it some flavor, but it got repetitive and i was hoping you'd take the bassline in a different direction. Good luck though.

WE'RE IN!! Wohoo! We just got notified today. We play next on Sept. 2nd, and this time it will be in front of a few hundred people!
Tks a ton for all the suggestions guys. I've reconsidered my part for the song and i'm going to switch my part during the chorus and the solo to a walking part. I tried it during practice and I think it sounds much better. This is by far our most high energy song, and the one that uses the most slapping, but still it was over-applied. Tks again!

slapping was gay
tone sucked
tapping was pretty cliche
singing sucked
+ the most used progression ever
and the guitar tone sucked too
So yeah I give it a 2/10. And you all looked like you'd just left your weekend Counter-Strike LAN for a couple of hours to try and form a band - with the exception of the drummer.
Tip - wear pants, not shorts.

Maybe. idk
But he's right. The tap-intro should have leaded into the song, not stop and then the song starts. As been said before slapping got boring.
I'm not saying you suck at singing. But the singing did suck IMHO.
Tones, I don't consider. Cuz, I don't know if you used your own gear and the recording was crappy so.
However, shorts are nice when it's warm outside. :D
Being a drummer, I can honestly say that the drumpart sucked dog weiner.
And being cool, I can honestly say that the guitarpart didn't really do anything. He should have followed the bassline more. Think 'Money' by PF, even though it's a crappy song:p.
And better lyrics please.

Darn the man who has an opinion !
I said the same thing, although 2/10 is a bit lower than what I'd give it.

Honesty's cool man, tks. What about the slapping was gay though, and why did the singing suck (cuz IMHO I think flea slaps a lot more and Neil Young sings a lot worse and their both doin ok eh)?
All tone issues, I assure you, are because of the recording. Its an old ****ty camera and it made us sound super tinny. Really i'm only asking about composition/performance.
But LOL at the cs thing haha. I actually do play but the other two wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole. We actually spent 6 hrs/day the two days before playing that song (on top of our normal practice schedule). We practice very often, but we're really good friends tho so its fun anyways.

The singing really wasn't bad, except right at the beggining, but that usually happens everywhere. I'm sure the recording made it worse, so don't worry about it too much/

It's not that mailman has an opinion. He makes comments that are always negative and extremely exagerated. I agree with masstrrbasser.

exactly. radio, you at least gave your opinion in a respectful way and if i'm not mistaken (haven't read this thread in a day or so) you gave some advice. mailman was just being a douche, and criticising with no reason. I thought the slapping was a bit redundant and told him why. Slapping adds flavor, and there was just too much. I didn't say: "your slapping sucked, and your shorts are gay." Theres a difference between telling someone your opinion, and being a belligerent ***.
