My first bass was made by Stagg ( it was a copy of a Fender precision), it was cheap but served me well.

squire affinity p-bass pack - the most popular starter bass going, and it can hold its own against far more expensive basses if you like the tone

Ibanez, Dean, or Peavey would be your best bet.
well how cheap are you talking?
if youre looking for around 200$ or under, go Rondomusic.net
if youre looking around 200-300$ go ibanez, musicman olp, or peavey
if you are willing to dish out around 400$ I would recommend a Fender MIM Jazz or Precision bass

People need to know your budget, music you'll beplaying, tone that you prefer, amp and cab you'll be using....etc. If all you want is a cheap bass then do a search and buy the least expensive thing you find. If you want useful info, give as much info as possible

OLP MM-2. For a $250 bass, the quality is amazing.

It trulely is a great bass.
If you want something even cheaper I reckomend lokking at a Stagg Fusion, it was my first bass and I think it amounted to about £90 or something crazy like that, in the USA it would probably cost about $150 give or take a bit

I second a Yamaha RBX 170 - great variety of tones for the price serves all genres, my mate still has one and it still feels nice to play on occation can't go wrong - even so my bass tutor bought my one of me when I got me schecter, can't go wrong with that.
