I've been seriously looking into one of the higher models of Genz Benz bass heads... probably the GBE 600 or GBE 750. I found a great deal (basically factory price) but havent had a chance to try it locally. These amps have some really consistent, great reviews.

I play metal and use two main tones. One (amp's tone) is warm and growly, the other (sansamp bddi) is digital sounding and EQ'ed for aggressive slapping/cutting through high gain.

Can these amps get warm/growly enough?

I really really like Genz Benz gear. Definately some of the most underated equipment around. From my limited experience in store I found them to be fairly versatile the tube pre adds a some nice warmth and the fet pre is some great cleans. People describe them as GK on steroids.

From what I've played of them I was most definitely NOT impressed. To my ears they sounded VERY one dimensional. GK on steroids? If that's the analogy we're going with then I would describe the hair-loss, shrunken testicles aspects of steroids

I've heard mixed reviews myself, mostly bad, though.

When im upgrading to a half stack im definately going for a GBE 400. Loved the tone it produced even when the eq was set on flat. The higher models have the tube circutry right? Id definately try and have a play of one.

I've played with a guitarist who uses a Genz Benz El Diablo head and cab, and I think it's got an awesome sond, especially the distortion. This is all pretty subjective, of course, because he was going for a modern hard rock tone without that icky Mesa triple rectumfied sound. Haven't played their bass gear, so I can't really speak to it.

^^^I've never heard their guitar stuff, so I can't comment on it. That being said... what's wrong with the Mesa Triple Rec sound? Actually, more specifically, my guitar player uses a Dual Rec Tremoverb. I just retubed and retensioned it.... good lord it sounds awesome.
