firstly, let me say that i don't know anything about singing. all i know is that i can tell when i'm hitting the right notes....and it seems like...i have a really hard time singing higher like it seems like most people do....like james from metallica...like on the older stuff. i can hit that stuff, or at least close to it, maybe tuned down a half step, but i can tell it's right at the top of my voice, like i'm close to my voice breaking and stuff. it seems like james is just yelling on the old cds, and it seems like that would make it easier to hit those notes...but idk how to do that. so tell me if it's possible to work on being able to make my range higher....and i guess while your at it, how to scream "properly" like the guys from as i lay dying and trivum. whenever i do anything that sounds like it, my throat gets soar in like a minute, so it must be wrong

This is something I did a while ago for basic rasp instruction.

http://media.putfile.com/Rasp-Instructions

One thing I didn't put in that was to make sure to USE YOUR GUT. If you don't use your gut, you WILL destroy your throat. The clip wasn't exactly designed for extreme metal, moreso just for voice acting and the like (but the basis of the idea is from screaming).

As for hitting higher notes... sorry, you'll have to wait for someone else. :p

And, yes, if your throat gets soar, you're doing it wrong. Make sure, with screaming, to not hold back. It's kinda silly to "scream" quietly.

Also, if you get serious with screaming, pick up the DVD Zen of Screaming by Melissa Cross.

No, you're not doing their technique wrong. The fact is that the technique itself is wrong.

The way Matt Heafy screams is he just tries to squeeze it out. Wrong, wrong, wrong!

Markaba has a huge voice help thread you should check out, but for doing screams, I'll tell you right now that the key is to relax and let the sound roll up out of your chest. The rasp is generated by air rattling on the back of the throat.

Ideally, you should be able to get the sound out at a conversational volume. You avoid tiring your vocal cords, and it's less wear on your throat.

You also have to learn how to resonate. Head voice is the hardest to learn, so start out trying to get your voice to vibrate in your chest. Place a hand on your upper chest and sing, you'll know you're doing it right when the lower notes cause a vibration in the chest.

hmm....it seems i already am doing "head voice" right, cause first try, my chest vibrated. and when i say rasp, maybe i meant somethign different....i just meant like, the harsher singing voices people have, like old metallica, slayer....pantera...idk, most bands probably....just like, to get past what sounds like just normal "clean" singing...just like your talking, but higher notes

First of all, that's not head voice. That's chest voice. I should have been more specific.

Anyway, I know exactly what you're talking about. It's the same principle all around. It's just a matter of learning control.

Merkaba's voice help thread has exercises on isolating the vocal chords, using the the diaphragm, breath control, et cetera.

Of course, there's no substitute for practice. It took me over a year, but I'm finally getting the hang of growling.

Sing the scream

Practice singing first. If you cant hit the note decently in a normal singing voice you can't do it with a lot more push. You can go with the Melissa Cross DVD but I dont really think she has that great of a scream. Probably better in a mic. But I dont think the dvd is all that informative anyways. I've got one, I dont have a dvd burner, if I did I'd send you one. I may try to get my buddy to burn a few copies. how illegal is that shlt!?? I think she's got another dvd thats better...I wouldnt want you to waste your money. I think I'll rewatch it just to make sure. its really more about good breath support so you dont clamp the larynx shut. If you can hold high head notes its not only better sounding when you normally sing but you'll be able to scream better. So practice singing. You should post a sample if you can. preferably of just you singing a scale maybe from middle C up with your instrument of choice if you need.

I know she has a CD on screaming thats supposed to go a lot more in depth than the DVD did, and then The Zen Of Screaming 2 comes out early next year I believe which is all screaming. I read that she wanted everyone to learn basic technique in the first one to build up so no one hurts themselves when they get into real screaming. But the CD should have a lot of good exercises on it so go over to www.melissacross.com It might be worth a try but I haven't bought it yet.

I think you should invest in singing lessons if you're serious about singing..getting some basic courses from a teacher specializing in pop n rock singing would help. Try the classifieds or the national association of teaching in singing www.nats.org
