It is a rare beast that can pull off the numerous feats set forth by the mighty members of Mastodon. For lack of a better term, “Upward Mobility” best describes their place on the heavy metal food-chain. These Atlanta metallers have gone from an underground favorite to one of the scene’s saviors. Notoriously referred to as Rush by way of Metallica, that slugline can’t match the complexity of Mastodon’s brutal riffs and literate content. Leviathan, a concept album which employs imagery from Moby Dick, serves as an allegory for a life spent on the road. On this record, The Taste of Chaos Ensemble is going back to Mastodon’s seminal masterpiece for a truly challenging tribute. Each piece of the music is sonically twisted by these audacious musicians.
