Here are a few I have been working on this morning.

First, i've got the feet going with a 3 note ostinato. Over this I play a rim click on my side snare on every 1st note of every group of 4 notes.
So far, we have a 3 note foot ostinato with my left hand clicking quarters over the top. Next, I add the right hand on the ride playing the first note of every group of 3 notes from the foot ostinato.

RC|x---x---x---x---|x---x---x---x---|x---x---x---x---|
RD|o--o--o--o--o--o|--o--o--o--o--o-|-o--o--o--o--o--|
BD|o-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo|-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-|oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-o|
HF|-x--x--x--x--x--|x--x--x--x--x--x|--x--x--x--x--x-|

Next, I orchestrate my right hand ride pattern, onto the toms, simply going back and forth.

CS|x---x---x---x---|x---x---x---x---|x---x---x---x---|
T1|------o---------|--o-----------o-|----------o-----|
T2|---o-----o-----o|-----o-----o----|-o-----o-----o--|
FT|o-----------o---|--------o-------|----o-----------|
BD|o-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo|-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-|oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-o|
HF|-x--x--x--x--x--|x--x--x--x--x--x|--x--x--x--x--x-|

Then for something totally different, I swapped the original ride pattern for a double-time cascara pattern which I play on the cowbell.

CS|x---x---x---x---|x---x---x---x---|x---x---x---x---|
CB|x-xx-x-xx-x-xx-x|x-xx-x-xx-x-xx-x|x-xx-x-xx-x-xx-x|
BD|o-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo|-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-|oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-o|
HF|-x--x--x--x--x--|x--x--x--x--x--x|--x--x--x--x--x-|

Just some things for you fellas to try.

Sick deal. I probably can't play that yet but I'll go ahead and give it a try one of these days. I'm still trying work on pages of stick control while playing the latin foot patter(boom che ba boom - o xoo xoo)

another good one with that foot pattern is "the rudimental ritual" in alan dawson's book. basically playing rudiments in an arranged progression over that foot pattern. great great stuff

I saw a guy from Berklee do the rudimental ritual. He got a scholarship I think, or was it the Steve Gadd award. I dunno, but yeah this guy was great. Did a melodic tom solo in 5/4. He was supporting Terry Bozzio in clinic.

Ostinatos are really something I need to work on. I can get the one in your example down, as long as I'm improv'ing overtop of it, instead of playing a constant pattern. But other than some simple improv, I'm hopeless with ostinatos.

Any suggestions on what to learn first?
