Game Wont Load :(

So I bought Super Monkey Ball Deluxe the other day from Gamestation and bought it second hand. When I got home I loaded the game and when I got to the Screen Selection screen like choosing between 50HZ and so on, it wouldnt move, I couldnt select anything, I couldnt change the selection, nothing would budge.
I assumed it was the disk being faulty, so I took the game back, got my money back and bought it new from Tescos, same scenario. I cant get passed that screen. Methinks its to do with me having a PS1 controller as I threw my PS2 controller at a wall after losing a game of Tekken too many times in a row.
The thing is though, is that the PS1 controller works fine with Resident Evil 4. Does anyone know what the problem is?

I always thought ps1 controllers just didn't work with ps2 games...or even a ps2. I remember thinking it odd that you'd have to use a ps2 controler to play a ps1 game on a ps2. But anyway, I don't think ps1 controllers work with Ps2s.

Yeah it's definately the remote, it should say on the case it doesn't work with a PS1 control. I think RE4 didn't use the analogues so that's why it worked.
