so does ableton live.

ableton's more of a daw though, which is great if you need one, but not if you don't.

On a related subject, how would one connect trigger pads into a laptop for that same purpose?

Just thinking it out - i'm not too exactly sure, but if your laptop has audio in, you could go that way. And if it's got MIDI in, and your trigger thinger has midi out, go that route. But if neither are available, you may have to do some crossing and get some adapters. But I really don't know.

Ahh that sounds good. I was thinking of getting a Roland SPD-6 which has MIDI out, so I could send those signals to the laptop into a soft-sampler... Right? What would I need to get for my laptop for it to have MIDI in?

I really don't know, I've never done anykind of recording - lol. But, I'd think there are adapters available that can transfer from midi to usb if need be. maybe the roland has a usb/firewire out?

and if it doesn't, you could prolly find one that does if your hearts not set on the roland.

Do you know how powerful the laptop will need to be? Does it need to have a really powerful cpu?

That kind of depends on the software you use and what you're going to use with it.

What are the specs of your laptop?

I don't have one yet. I need to get one to double up as my college laptop and live sampler.

I'd say as fast as you can afford, tbh. Just be sure to get alot alot of RAM. And a huge hard drive too. To store your samples and stuff. But just about any new laptop on the market should be good to go. I'd think.

I'm really looking for a used laptop from eBay perhaps? I want one under £200.

i don't know. that's gonna maybe be a tough squeeze, but i think you'll be able to make it work. just when you get it max out the ram. cause you'll need it.

umm, yea. i don't really know, but i think it could work. hell i was running ableton on my dad's peice of crap emachines. 1ghz celeron with 128 mb ram, so you can surely get something.

(fruityloops is alot less of a resource hog too!)

Ok ill try fruityloops..

Also if your looking for a laptop make sure you get at least 512mb of ram... And a decent cpu
