Hello all. I was wondering whether anyone was a fan of this type of music, What i wrote above probably isn't correct but it's all i could make of it.
I made my analysis and the idea for this thread from this band, The "On The Edge" septet, is who i'm talking about, they have a 3-4 piece horn section, percussionist, 6 string electric bassist, drummer and synth/keys player (the 4th horn on some songs). They released a self-titled album in 2003 and have toured Europe for a few years on and off.
Anyway, to hear them goto: http://www.jamesmorrison.com/frm-main.htm => multimedia => scoll down to "On The Edge" and click on "Still Danherous" for the urbanish funk thing i partly described and/or click on "On The Edge" for a fast electric song, with drum solo.

There's plenty of stuff out there with similar influences, and a lot of it is great.
One band that I've been getting into recently is one that's from around here(and I actually just started studying piano with the keyboard player) is called Modern Groove Syndicate(You can hear some stuff about them http://www.samhillbands.com/bands/modern_groove/index.shtml).
There are also bands like Karl Denson's Tiny Universe, and plenty of others I don't feel like naming that do cool stuff. I'll come back and post more later when I'm less tired.

That link didn't work for me? But it's good to see at least one person who shares the liking of this music. What did you think of the music in the link i posted?

The Morrison link? Great trumpeter and some interesting horn arrangements, but some truly awful production. And that synth sound.......bleurgh!!

The album "Sonic Trance" -Nicholas Payton, might fit the bill.
It's spacey, funky, hip-hop,...kind of unorhodox jazz recording.
It's kind of 70s Miles, and Fela Kuti influenced.
I'd give it maybe 4.5 out of 5.
Stongly reccomended if you want "Urban Jazz" or whatever.

Urban Jazz. What is this?
something like Michael Bubble Buble?
Or is it something like Jazzanova Crazy Penis NuJazz?
If youre citing James as an example.. id be more inclined to think Michael Bubble.
And if that is the case - get yourself onto Mark Sholtez. a fabulous keys/vocalist from Brisbane. Just got signed to Verve :) And the album has Christian McBride on bass *ouch! :)

Lol well yeah, thats why i said "Thats the best i could do with classifying it".
The Morrison link? Great trumpeter and some interesting horn arrangements, but some truly awful production. And that synth sound.......bleurgh!!
I don't know whether the production has anything to do with the fact that its a live album, but yeah. The synth didnt really do it for me either. Honestly, i was mainly focusing on the other musicians.

Check out 'Incognito', the best Jazz Funk band in the world. A few more greats are Groove Collective, James Taylor Quartet, Poogie Bell Band, Mezzoforte, Raw Stylus, all fantastic.
