Painting a guitar

i wanna paint my guitar. the body and the fretboard inlays aswell. what is the best way to go about doing this? cuz i already tried to do it with just regular acrylic paint and it came off easily. i dont think i damaged the guitar i just think it needs something stronger.so should i spray paint it or what? is there a special way to preserve or protect the guitar before painting it?

the best way to do it is to first sand off all the paint, then put a primer on it (spray on ) then put a few coats ,also spray on of the colour that you want then get polyurithane (sp?) and put a few coats of that on . then thats about it exxept if you want you can buff the finnished product if theres any bumps on it. other than that thats pretty much it .

But myles covered it all already. Definitely get a P/U paint.

(Here is basically what I do)

If you want to paint the fingerboard, go ahead. It wont hurt anything. Just make sure to either pop out all of the frets or cover them up.

Sand down the original paint/body with sand paper and increase the grit. I'd suggest ending with no less than 600-grit.

Then spray on two coats of a primer. Again, lightly sand with fine grit paper and increase until it is smooth and there is still primer around it.

Spray on a couple coats of the paint color that you like. Again, lightly sand with fine-grit and buff it out until it's smooth and still the color you'd like.

Now, I like to spray on 3 coats of polyurethene and repeat the last process, using a buffer in the very end. Gets a beautiful shine, and has about the same amount of paint as an autobody painting place would have slapped on in half the time for twice the price.
