All I can say is practice. I had the same problem. I practiced 3 days a week and then I started practicing 1 day a week. Your voice gets used to screaming if you practice everyday and if you don't practice that much you have to get used to it again.

Rest your voice, drink some green tea. If you want to practice screaming find out the right way to practice, but for not rest your oice for a few days i possible to prevent any damage.

However, I'm just a drummer so wtf do I know.

I'm pretty sure there is a thread around here somewhere that talks about proper technique and letting your chords heal, also Merkaba has excellent advice and is knowledgeable on this subject.

I advise you stop trying to scream and drink lots of water. Practice quietly as often as you can.

I noticed the same thing a few years ago when I started to sing more agressively.

Before I got into good olde rock and roll I used to be a tenor. But, as things went on, I got into rock, and sang for a band with a really crappy PA, so I had to sing really loud (ie: shouting a lot).

This (and a few other things I was doing wrong) cut my tenor voice to ribbons. I'm now a baritone.

I find, the harder you push your voice, the deeper it will start to drop.

Get the DVD "The Zen of Screaming" if you still have any interest in screaming. It teaches you how to scream correctly so you dont mess up your vocal chords.

Yeah, I went on vacation last week, and when I came back, band practices just weren't the same (though I'm back in the zone now).

Melissa is cool...but I have that dvd and to me its a weak scream she teaches. Plus its not as informative as I thought, unless I skipped something! Better than nothing I guess...and probably works well enough with a mic on stage so..but I dont like it.

Threadstarter, for now you should do light Ee's on your speaking voice. Holding them out with support, singing them. And go down low. Hold some low ones and then slide back up to speaking pitch and a few notes higher. Do this for about ten minutes. then slowly work your way up to higher notes. go here. Finish with lowest notes. http://www.sputnikmusic.com/forums/showthread.php?t=219911

Ive messed my voice up screaming before too. I just stopped screaming for a few weeks and just rested it and it got a lot better. It changed my voice a little though.

When I first started singing/screaming years ago I really didn't know what I was doing and pushed my voice WAY too hard and lost my voice for 4 days. Pretty freaky and I have learned to not push too hard.

TS, really, if you scream, relax your throat, it's all you need to know.

For a couple of weeks I haven't been able to post. Let's see if I've fixed the problem...

A ha!

Ok, now here's what I've been wanting to say:

If you rest, your voice will probably be fine. Don't sing. Speak only when necessary. (Whispering usually doesn't help, and may make your voice worse.) Get plenty of sleep. Drink lots of water. Don't be in smoky areas. Do this for at least a week.

Then, gradually, get back to singing. Your voice should be okay. (If it's NOT, see an ENT [ear, nose, and throat doctor] right away, as you might have a bad case of nodes, which could permanently damage your voice if left untreated.)

I wouldn't scream for a while, either--at least until you can find a good voice coach to guide you.

Best wishes,
Kristina

this reminded me of when i was in a musical (yes, i am a thespian! ha!) and i had the leading role and i suddenly got sick, losing my voice for many days. the director told me to drink hot dr. pepper and lemon juice. that REALLY helped. obviously, you know about tea and water and such. hope i've helped some.

a myriad of possibilities...

He may do it way more tense than you
he may do it with a very high larynx and you don't
he may have a weaker mechanism
He may have a previous condition
he may be going out of his range
He may be trying to pull chest voice up into head

well six isnt really a myriad but...

I've never properly thanked you, so, thank you sir.

I just don't see whats so good about screaming lyrics in a song. It doesn't add anything, takes away from the lyrics, and makes people who are not tone deaf cringe.

I like the old rock n' roll screams, you know like during a bridge or right before a solo when its just like a howl. That adds to the excitement. And I find that Lennon's screaming on his Plastic Ono Band does add a bit to the album, and it reflects his personal life since he was going through primal scream therapy at the time.

As long as you scream properly, your voice won't change (it'll get a bit hoarse for a few days while it adapts, but then it's fine).

If you scream improperly, however, then yes, your voice will change.

I'd assume that your voice would go lower because if you're screaming improperly, you're damaging your high voice.

So, as a counter point, I'd assume, growling incorrectly could possibly force you into a higher speaking voice.

I just don't see whats so good about screaming lyrics in a song. It doesn't add anything, takes away from the lyrics, and makes people who are not tone deaf cringe.

Right.

You see, Theo, screaming is a form of singing too. It takes talent, it expresses emotion, and a lot of people love it.

I highly doubt someone as musically talented as Mikael Akerfeldt is tone deaf, so stop trying to sound like people who don't understand music are the only ones who like screaming. You are just quite ignorant when it comes to screaming, that's all.

Ladys and Gentlemen, this would be a perfect example of what we call OPINION

This is also similar to a phenomenon we experience called musical taste.

So what if he was going through some aptly named therapy? Its therapy for alot of people when they scream on stage or in a song. I know this firsthand.

Did you ask them how it would make their voice lower? No.... Good thing because they probably couldnt answer you. If you take your time and learn that a musical scream is not that much more overwhelming to your system and that you dont ever need to push 100% for any vocal technique, then you will be fine. But you have to learn it.

someone said the more you scream it makes your voice lower?

Chuck Schuldiner still had his high pitched voice on Live in LA, and he did nothing but (well I guess I wouldn't call it screams) death metal vocals (death style) for over 15 years before his death.

my friend who has screamed and growled for his band of 4years
has this ritual of chewing ginger slices before every gig. said it
works for him, makes his screaming smoother. though i cant imagine
what that must've tasted like. :amaze:
