Hey i'm wondering how neccessary this would be to my pc: Intel(R) 82801GR SATA AHCI Controller

I want to reformat my pc because its getting damn buggy, my hard drives are nearlly full too.
But heres the thing, I don't have a floppy drive to install the driver when i'm doing the install, could I survive without it?
I'm not too sure as to what it does, yeah I can really see that i pro training showing through.

Also, whats the best way to do a backup of files, I have tried 3 times today and wasted 3 dvds in the process using nero, it fails right near the end.
I only have 1 dvd left so I need a solid answer on that one.

why would you need a floppy to reinstall that SATA controller? I think you may be overcomplicating things by asking yourself all those questions.

I downloaded the program for the driver, this is what i get.

And i'm wondering do I need to install this at the time of the operating system also?

WHat do you propose I do?

And any ideas on the backup thing?

no dude, what you need to do is get the CD that came with your computer that has all the drivers on it and install from that.

if it's a dell, hp or any other peice of crap computer you may have to call them to find out what the driver cd looks like...most mother boards come with an ALL in ONe driver cd though so you just insert and install away...

Yeah but this is a rented pc and I never got the drivers cd with it.
It's got a few seperate disks for the sound card and stuff but not anything else.

All I need to know is if that driver is neccesary and whats the best way to backup my data.

Could I use a card to install the driver, I have a card reader in place of a floppy drive (floppy drive wasn't an option, damn rental companies, always gimmick before function) and a few spare sd cards.
Any idea if it would work?

As soon as I get a data backup I'll try it but i'm just wondering if you knew.

Honestly man, you're REALLY making this alot harder for yourself then you should.

look for a disc that came with the computer (since you have a disc for soundcard) that says 'main board disc' or 'Installer disc' ....better yet...go get all the discs that came with the computer ...and make a post about what discs you have. Most likely the driver is on your mainboard one like i have mentioned.

With nero, what data are you trying to back up? you do realize that all data must be in a single folder and then in the subfolders from there

what do i mean?

You can't go adding a folder like C:\program files and a file like C:\windows\temp because they're in two seperate directories.

Where as if you moved all the folders into one GIANT folder, say like
C:\backup

Then you can burn them since they're all in one spot instead of in different directories. I know on my computer it wont let me burn if i try it with them in directories that are all over the palce, but it defeintly will work if you do it like this .

all the disks I got with the computer:
Works 7.0
E176FP monitor documentation
Driver for wireless keyboard and mouse
Sound blaster xifi instalation disc
Symantec antivirus corporate edition

Any ideas?
That is all the discs, I didn't get anything remotely related to motherboards.

you would think that generic sata drivers would be good enough.

I dunno, I got a tech coming out to fix my pc monday so I'll probably just get his advice.
Turned my pc on this morning and even in safe mode you can get it past the windows loading screen, some sort of virus I would expect, something that I don't have the first clue how to fix.

Someone could've told me windows has generic sata drivers, I didn't know, I have only installed it on about 15 identical machines during school.
And that was a straightforward install to which I got instructions.
