Hello, I don't really post here alot but I've been thinking about this alot lately.
In Jade Empire, the game on the Xbox. You have a choices that dictate your Path in life.
High being the path of goodness and generousity.
Low being the path of "evilness" and strength.
Now, the game clearly dictates the path of Low is not one of evil and not one of hate. A great example was "Someone of evil may see a begger and purposly ignore him when the begger asks for a coin. Someone of Low path may purposly not give the begger a coin hoping one day he will be able to survive on his own"
Now, I'm not an evil man. But I can see where the person of Low path is comming from. If you give a man fish everyday, when you leave that man could starve. But if you don't give him a fish one day and he learns how to fish his own, that man eats everday. You there or not.
But then I think if you don't give that man a fish that man could starve, or steal, or anything else to survive, I don't want to promote violence.
Which philosophy do you guys agree with more?

I'd say I would take the High path.
The problem with society today, is not that everybody takes the low path.
They just don't give a ****.
95% of people walking by a beggar don't think 'Wow, I hope he can support himself someday', more like 'Get a job you useless piece of crap'.
The only time most people take the high path, are when it involves someone they are close to or friends with. Because that way, they know they are most likely to receive the high path and receive generosity somewhere down the line. I'm speaking from observation and obviously, a crude generalization.
In reality however, I think it's true sadly and going to be the death of society.

I think the problem with society is that they take NO path at all.
For someone that ignores the begger out of hate or disgust is someone that doesn't accept the fact THEY could become that.

I only give money to war vets and bums with no legs.
Most people, homeless or not, don't deserve half the things they get, rich people included.

Both.
I help people when they honestly need it, or have gotten into a tough situation out of fowl play, or when they are close to collapcing or if I have somthing I don't need, that somone else needs.
I'll give a homeless man my spare sandwich for example.
But I won't help somone who has gotten themselves into a tight situation because of stupidity or greed.
There a girl who decided she wanted a Mercades Benz for her first car, for example, and then decided she wanted to live in an $800 per week house, and she's now asking her friends for money so she can live her expencive lifestyle. I completely refuse to help her.

There will all ways be people that are hungry, poor, and defenseless.
If you feed that peson today, how will they tomorrow?
If you give them money today and they spend it how will they get money tomorror? And if you defend them today, how will they fight tomorrow?
I defiently see where you're comming from.

I don't think I'm 100 percent low or 100 percent high. No one is, I make decisions that are based on cruelty and I make desicions based on kindness. I'm human.

I was more talking about supporting those who are likely about to die. If you can't look after yourself, that's your own silly fault, but how can you learn to look after yourself when you really can't go on???

I think everybody balances this to different degrees, as nothing is in black and white.

I remember last year my neo-con religion teacher was speaking about how people shouldn't give to poor people, because then they wont have motivation to live on their own.
He obviously like got owned by 3/4 of the kids in the class, mainly because what he said came with no proof or anything to support it.
Sometimes, you shouldn't but alot of the time it'd be nice to give something, doesn't need to be like 10$, maybe like a quarter or something.

I'm with this guy.
One wrong decision is acceptable.
For your first car and house, if you're willing to not realize how expensive it truly is, that's a lesson that's going to be learned by you, not paid for by me.
That's just ridiculous

About the begger thing - Some look kind of creepy. would YOU feel comfortable about getting close to a creepy guy?
The obvious trick is to NOT make eye contact.

I don't like giving people money for doing nothing. That's why I prefer giving money to buskers. I told a homeless dude this once, and my friend was wearing a ska shirt, so he started going "hep hep hep! pickitup!" and dancing about. It was funny. Afterwards I battered him to death in an alley while singing the old-time classic "Singing In The Rain".

I didn't know if a little snidbit from a game would be serious enough for you guys.
But uh, nice responses, from the outlook it seems like you guys are generous High path losers.

There's only certain scenarios where the low path makes sense.
Are you saying you would take the low path for your own children?
"Make your own food infant" or "I don't have time to play, teach yourself"
