Bare Essentials

This is the absolute minimum you should buy.

- A two or four channel mixer.
- A sound card with a "Line-In" input.
- 2 Mic's with leads, for drums
- A "Y" cable to plug your stero outputs from your mixer into your PC.
- Instruments
- Recording software

Total cost - Around $300 - $400 if you go cheap

Recommended

This is what you should buy for a near pro-sound if you know what you're doing.

- An 18 Channel Mixer with FireWire and phantom power capability
- A good sounding Sound Card for playback
- 7 Drum Microphones (2 Condensers, 1 Snare Mic, 1 Kick Drum Mic, 3 Tom Mics)
- Direct Injection Box for Guitar
- Compressor
- Headphone Amp
- Recording Snake
- A diaphragm condenser mic
- Studio Monitors
- Leads and Mic Stands.

Total cost - Around $1500 - $2500

I'm guessing you don't know much about recording so I'd go with the first option to build up some skill :)
