Anyone like them, in internet or book form?

I haven't read too many short stories. I've read James Joyce's "Dubliners", a few by Hemingway, and a collection of stories by Jorge Luis Borges. Also, a few on the internet, here on the competition site, and on some forums about books and writing. One reason for this thread is that I've read poetry and novels, but not much in between those two mediums.

By far I liked Jorge Luis Borges' (very, very) short stories the best. There's a collection of all of them in one book now, but I've heard the translation isn't the best. What's a good translation?

Also, discuss/post writing or tips and stuff if you want.

Since this is the best forum for it, I'd also like to request from the mods for a resurrection of the short story competition threads. It was probably the least spammy of the threads in the Pit, too.

Haunted by Chuck Palahniuk is a good short story collection. They're linked together into a novel which works quite well. They can be hit and miss but the best ones are great.

 gross, sketchyjoe.

I've never actually read anything by Palahniuk, I want to start with Fight Club but it's never in the library, it's too popular. Also, I have no money so I'll only get it second hand.

I guess this is where everyone in the short story comp gets their short-sentence-short-paragraph style. Dudes, use a comma, they are fun.

An Occurence At Owl Creek, by Ambrose Bierce, something entirely more wholesome.

Start with Survivor, Choke or Lullaby.

What was that one that Truman Capote wrote about the boy who guesses the number of quarters in the jar? I loved that one, read it in school this past year.

My dad's been reading that. It seems pretty messed up. I may end up reading anyway though.

I've only read Ficciones and The Aleph so far, and though it's not a complete compilation of all his short stories, the translations seemed pretty good to me. I wouldn't know the editions off-hand but I could probably find out. I do think you're right about there being a complete collection, although I don't know anything about that.

And yeah, I'd be nice to see the Story Competitions continue.
