View Full Version : Reshaping a bolt on neck joint.. ?

Alright, I have an Ibanez GRX40 laying around. It plays great up until around the 17-18th fret, where the side of my hand runs into a large square block of wood.
The neck and body (alder) have too much potental to just throw away without at least trying to fix the neck joint. The fret job for a $200 guitar is amazing.

Now, I don't expect it to have the fret access that my Soloist does. I just want to reshape both the heel and the square block that the neck is bolted to. Something more rounded and easier to transition my hand position with on the higher frets.
Making the higher frets more 'playable' is the only thing that will save this guitar from the bin.

Anyone have any suggestions, tips, reasons why it'll break if I attempt it, etc? Just looking around for some options and opinions at the moment.

Visual stimulation (yes i realise that isn't an Ibanez, but the neck joint is exactly the same) -

Shape it like an Ibanez AAJ.

That is what im hoping to do really. The AANJ Ibanez axes are quite nice to play on the upper frets.

The whole build and that area of the body on mine is a bit different than a prestige, but I think I can get it fairly close. I just don't want the truss rod pushing through or anything when I start messing with the heel on the neck

The truss rod shouldnt poke out at all. Just dont go deeper than it already is, and dont put bolts in the middle, and you should be fine.
