Back when my old band was in the recording studio we were unhappy with the way the bass drums sounded due to mic placement and because the heads on the bass drum were old and crappy. Our producer was able to simply resample the sound of the bass drum with different sounds from his sound library of different drum kits.
Now I am starting to work on my home studio and I would like to know how to do that because I really just don't remember how he did it. I am using Cubase. Any help is appreciated.

Did the kick drum have the mic hole in the head? If not you probably won't find the sound you're looking for. What type of music is it for?

Yes it had the hole. We just ended up not liking the kick drum sound and the producer said, "No problem" and instead of adjusting mic placement and all that he just used a kick drum sound from his library and resampled it and it just altered the sound to sound like a good kick drum.

Oh and this is for a metal band.

Sound replacement software exists (I know it's there for Pro Tools, it's likely there for Cubase as well).

Something like this might be the key: http://www.kvraudio.com/get/2155.html

An alternate route would be to take MIDI triggers to the kit and capture MIDI data for the drums. You could then use the MIDI data to trigger a drum synth/sampler rather than using the miked instrument.

In either case, you'd need to be careful that you watch your leakage when you mic up the kit, as you might be stuck with bleeding from a bad snare sound into the tom mic or something and not ever really be able to get rid of it.

Awesome, I know this is different than the way he did it but I think it will work nicely.

Now does anyone know where I can download some good drum sounds?

Just do a google search for "free audio samples"

You'll find a lot of electronic/Hip-Hop sample sites, but a lot of them will have acoustic sounding samples as well. Additionally, try searching for the format you want (.wav, .aiff) and you'll find other spots.

If you find a few good sites, please post them: all the ones I was going to suggest have since shut down it seems.
