Allow me to post the 15th straight reply of...

YES! GO SEE THEM.

I was skeptical about seeing them earlier this year because I wasn't a big fan of Ghost Reveries at the time, but their show blew me away. The newer stuff really comes to life live.

I wouldn't be surprised.

One of my forum friends (excuse the expression :D) said that he drew wood during the intro to the Drapery Falls... I know I would.

Opeth is playing on Gigantour 2006...tickets will probably be over $100 but I'm still going just for Opeth.

I've always wondered if they were worth seeing as I don't think the acoustic bits would be that entertaining. However, I guess I'll give them a shot when they come here.

The acoustic songs are definately entertaining. It becomes somewhat magical.

Yea seriously. I went to Opeth and Nevermore last year in October. Probably the best show I will ever see.

Opeth without the acoustic bits would suck. The acoustic parts are what make their songs so enchanting.

Jude

Exactly. As far as I'm concerned Opeth without the acoustic sections are just another band (although obviously other bands make similar music)
To be fair, I don't think their heavy sections sound too much like anyone else either...but I do think the soft parts are essential.

Take this opinion with a grain of salt, as I've only seen very brief live clips.

It seems that Mike does his thing, rather dully. When the heavy bits come in, he slowly headbangs. That's about it.

Well, that's true, but the music is so sincere coming straight from them. You can't even compare it to any other live band. Unlike many bands that just have alot of energy and you go to SEE them, Opeth is a band you want to HEAR live. Everything is sooo clean and they make sure the quality is crystal clear.

Not to mention the jokes Mike tells. Surprised not many people have said that yet.

Have you seen that video where he plays all those covers, that vid owns. He's like yes, that is correct Smoke on the Water by Black Sabbath, and the whole crowd starts getting pissed.

Haha. Or surprised that people haven't started bitching that he talks to much. "Just shut up and play your little emo music."

Gah, I hate people.

Yeah, there was a guy that went for Devildriver that I knew that went to the same show and it was his first time seeing Opeth. He said it sounded emo and I'll never forgive him.

DD killed by the way. Their music sucks but they put on a killer show.

I get to see Celtic Frost, Decapitated, Soilwork, and Darkest Hour all in the same week in November :)

If I were going to them, I'd get to see Gigantour and Celtic Frost on back-to-back days.

I saw them when they toured for Blackwater Park. They sounded awesome live. They played pretty much exactly like on the albums... which could be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on your viewpoint. As great as it sounded, that was slightly bad in my view. And they just stood there and played like they were bored. Bah. Cult of Luna just stood there when I saw them too, but I dunno, you could feel a lot more feeling coming from them compared to Opeth.

So overall... they sounded awesome, yet it was a bit disappointing. Good for the cheap price the tickets were then, though.

He barely said sh.it when I saw 'em.

Reminds me of seeing Cult of Luna... some of the morons there for Mastodon (I love them too, so I'm not dissing them or all the fans) were yelling sh.it, bitching about the long songs and not rocking hard enough.

1. Their music is complex. They aren't going to be able to run around like crazy.
2. Mikael didn't used to say anything. Now he's a comedian.

They're only worth seeing if you like them amd their music.
Otherwise don't bother. I saw them once and am planning on it again, Mikael is hilarious so you should go for the jokes if anything, he has a good time and he'll make you laugh in between their amazing songs. But seriously, if you dig the music, see a show if it comes to town.

I haven't seen them live yet - but am seeing them at the Roundhouse in London on 9th November - supported by Paradise Lost, which is a proper "Brucie Bonus" for me, as I love them too.

If the Lamentations DVD is anything to go by, it'll be a quality night

I saw them last year at the Mean Fiddler in London (UK). It's a small venue for a band like Opeth and it was AWESOME. The sound was AWESOME. Mikael was so funny and the all band was really getting into it. Extol were supporting with was an extremely surprise to me.

Seriously, probably the best show I've seen... and I've seen Tool.

I just found out that I might be able to see them at Gigantour this year. That is going to be shweet.
