I was just cuirous, but what are the games you played that were more than just either a shoot em up, or just fun, that actually made you think about things?

Some of the puzzles in the original Silent Hill made me want to punt a small child off a bridge.

Deus Ex

Indeed!

Also, Any Civ game. Any Sim City game. X-Com, and perhaps Fallout and Fallout: Tactics.

Heck yes on Civ. And throw in Alpha Centauri.

Deus Ex?

Not really, the AI wasn't that hard to get past or take out.

Hm I can't think of any games atm.

Did you play on Realistic? One good shot and you were dead.

Yeah it was easy to sneak, but I generally liked killing everybody anyway just so I didn't have someone accidentally come in behind me while patrolling.

Yeah, Alpha Centauri, forgot that one. Its my favorite game, actually, don't know why I forgot about it :P

I played it one thing from the top difficulty, I just upgraded my pistol and one shot HSed everyone. Great game, although the endings wern't that great for such an epic game.

Half-Life was the first FPS to make me not run through and kill everything in sight.

Well talking storyline wise i found MGS 2 disturbing as the plot unravelled, though towards the end it got a little silly. And the macabre little twists to the original Silent Hill lingered on long after and made me think, such as when you find that painting of the door in the school and later on when everything turns into hell the door comes to be real. It really freaked me out.

Talking gameplay i would say Civilisation 3, a lot of forethought was involved.

Xenogears and Chrono Cross, because the storylines were quite complex and interesting. Eternal Darkness.

Shadow of Collosus, definately makes you think, strategy wise.:thumb:

I can probably name a ton of others, but my brain is on imminent shut down.:thumb:

EDIT-Oh man, how can I forget Myst, Riven and the rest of that series? Those games had some serious puzzles. Resident Evil series had some good puzzles, especially Zero. Silent Hill games had some tough puzzles, also. For example, in SH2, who would've known to use a 6 pack of juice to dislodge the garbage bag from the chute? I would've used the stick I had. :D

Oh yeah, Illusion of Gaia suprisingly had some tough parts, also Terranigma.

Kinda agree with you there. The endings weren't epic enough.

I wish there was a whole nother branch to the game, where you don't betray UNATCO at the NSA headquarters and you maybe join up with Majestic 12. But oh well.

Yeah it was a bit pointless that after all those decisions you make during the game, it all came down to what you did in the last 5 minutes anyway. I enjoyed it though, and I heard someone is trying to get the rights of Eidos to make another one.

Story wise... MGS for the boss death speeches, FF Tactics for the ridiculous story, in addition to the battle system.

Gameplay wise... Starcraft, Warcraft 2 and 3, Myst.

I haven't encountered any games that have made me think, but I have played games that usually invoke feelings of loneliness, such as Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Sometimes, riding out in the desert at sunset, it just makes you me think about ... things.

I liked the Age of Empire series alot. Planning attacks and defenses.
Civilization series all rocked.
Mostly everything by Sid Meier I liked.

Sim City. I loved the idea of building a better infrastracture than my terrible city of which I constantly fight with. (im a cabbie)

Myst series. One of the few games that I could suspend my disbelief with almost completely.

After trying to think of some games, I've come to the conclusion that all games require a strategy for success, which means thinking. I don't think I've ever played a game that I finished by just mindlessly droning on.

I still can't think of any games that really required a lot of thought, though.

There are alot of RTS games that involve lots of thinking (unless you just take other people's strats...which loses half the fun). Especially a game called Impossible Creatures. Not only did you need to plan a stratagy, you had to create your own units using different animal parts.

I've only played Sands of Time, but it didn't really make me think. More of a hack and slash game.

The Monkey Island series.

Amazing, those late 80's/early 90's adventure games were incredible.

Monkey Island series
Loom
Quest for Glory
King's Quest
Obviously most RTS (Warcraft III and such)
As well in some MMORPG raiding situations, or ways to earn gold.. ;)

Not so much intellectual depth, just problem solving and well.. thinking

Yeah Morrowind is pretty intense, and to follow that beefy storyline was a lot of thinking.

I've never thought more when playing a game than with Rome: Total War.

That storyline sure was insane. Plus there's a whole Lord of the Rings sized mythology in the game books. PLUS a whole forum section on the official site where people argue about and create MORE of the mythology.

Another game that makes me think is Angband. It's all Ironman (when you die, you DIE - you have to start a new character from scratch). So when your leve 35 character you've been struggling to keep alive is down to 12 health and bleeding heavily and you have no health potions, you have to think REALLY HARD about all the items in your inventory, spells you have, monsters around you, chances of pulling off an escape, etc....and then you think really hard about smashing your computer after your star character dies.

^^ Oh yeah that reminds me of when I used to play Runescape. Me and my friends would make low level 20-40 pkers and at that level the whole population you're fighting with is a bunch of hardcore strategy buffs purposfully creating low level characters to fight with. Most intense RPG fighting I've ever done.

Diablo 2 has taken some pretty hard thinking, but once you're done with your characters then it's just easy.

Myst was easy to "beat", but I never even got to a few of the worlds. Riven, oh god I agree.

This reminds me. I highly recommend Angband to everyone. It's the most consistently addicting game I have ever played, ever. If you're a graphics/physics whore it's not for you because it's an ASCII turn based dungeon crawl game, but if you love unconquerable challenges instead of just games you play for 20 hours and finish, you should check it out.

There are also dozens of player-made mods or "variants" which change the gameplay from slightly to drastically. I play with the "Zangband" variant.

Check out this comprehensive Angband site: http://www.thangorodrim.net/

Angband is great for staying up way later than you intended to just playing....and playing....and playing....and promising yourself, "OK, just ONE more recall up to the town and sell my loot and then I'm done..."

It is. It could be hard/frustrating to get into, too...I remember it taking a while for me to like it because I sucked at it at first and got sick of having my level 5 characters killed off. But you get better at it just like you get better at an instrument...or liking classical music.

I always found that the endings of Half Life and Half Life 2 made me think. This semi-philosophical dialog/visualry reminded me about each person comes to reflect about where they are in life when they have accomplished something of mammoth proportions, or at least I think.
