I was wondering if there was any metal that uses a piano or an orchestra in their music mainly for atmosphere?

I've always liked the way black metal bands would put orchestras in the background of their music to make the atmosphere frightening.

Nightwish, some of their stuff is really good....

+ Rhapsody do it best, but it's not for everybody

Sonata Arctica and Symphony X come to mind too

Most power metal generally uses alot of strings, pianos and all that kind of stuff

i suggest that you look into a band called Galloglass, they use orchestral stuff alot and they are bloody brilliant

Galneryus. They use a few orchestral elements in their music.

Vintersorg uses the piano, good if you don't mind the Swedish singing.

Dream Theater use keyboard a lot, sometimes string and piano though.

They count as metal?

Summoning are the king of atmospheric strings.

Winds.

They're exactly what you're looking for. Same with Age of Silence.

Yes! The guys from Rhapsody are masters at composition. Easily the best for what TS wants.

Ihsahn's solo release has massive amounts of strings and atmospheric piano in it.

Rhapsody is probably one of the best bands with orchestral compositions mixed with metal though. They'll do you good.

Wintersun uses a lot of strings in there stuff. But Rhapsody(which is now Rhapsody of Fire) is the best when it comes to keyboards. Check into alot of the Viking/Folk and Black atmospheric kind of metal if you havent already. I listen to this kind of music on a daily basis... but my band Verfallen uses a lot of keyboards and piano. heres are myspace if anybody wants to check it out. www.myspace.com/verfallenband

Although your technically not supposed to whore your band here, I must say that this instrumental piano song is awesome. Your keyboardist really knows his stuff, props to both the playing and the composing.

Is it just me or does Christophe do the logo for half the Metal bands on Myspace?

Hey I'm just trying to spread the word... thats all. But anyway, thanks for your appreciation! Christophe does ALOT of logos for the metal bands on myspace, So I guess you can say he does half the logos for the bands on there. But he did the emperor, old mans child, and borknagar logo so it is quite an honor for him to do are logo. He does incredible work.

Well, of course, but ANATO can't touch Rhapsody in terms of orchestral compositions.

Sonata Arctica are indeed excellent live. They may fill the atmospheric piano bill as well...check out Shamandalie.

Do not overlook this recommendation. Both bands are incredible, but I prefer Winds. The Imaginary Direction of Time blew my mind when I first heard it.

Yep. Therion are another one...huge pioneers in the sound. After Forever are also great. Arcturus is another one...pretty much piano driven, with some strings here and there (Ad Astra  ). Not to whore myself, but I've also been working on some compositions similar to that approach.
