hi. i have a crappy SX bass lying on my bedroom and i'm wanting to put all this grafitti and stuff onto it. i'm going to try using one of those things, like a soldering iron to burn the designs into the wood. anyone have any experiance doing this???

a soldering iron will burn the polyeurethane clear coat and leave a nasty mess. strip the paint before you do this. and a soldering iron will not only make burn marks, but it'll also dig into the wood. i recommend a tool specifically designed for wood burning/etching.

That i dont think is a very good idea at all. if you are wanting to do graffiti why dont you sand the finish down to the bare wood. then spray your graffiti design on then put a coat of polyeurethane over the top.

^^^^^ he said he wants to burn the designs into the wood, not paint them.

i say go for it its not exactly the best bass ever and if you mess up whats the worst that could happen itll be scratched and burned so what, but you still need to sand it first

Burning stuff is bad news bro. Just paint it so if you mess up on your graf (I know I certainly do) then you can paint over.

OR you could draw youre design out first and when you are happy with it then you could burn/etch it in

its a crappy SX bass... its not like its a vintage fender haha... its worth nothing... i just think it would look cool with designs and stuff all over it.

Sounds like a cool project.

Are you gonna post Pics when/if you do it?

Cheers

I've seen pictures of a home-made guitar with the headstock decal design burnt into the wood - looked pretty damn cool.

I dunno if I'd trust myself to do it straight onto mine though. When it comes to it I might try on a couple of blank pieces, see how it works out

btw TS, SX basses aren't so bad. there are a few MXers (radiobass *cough*) who love theirs and tweak the action a bit so they play awesome. it's just a matter of turning the truss rod, intonation/saddle adjusting, and maybe some replacement pickups. i wouldn't go all "i don't care" just because it's an SX. just IMO though.
