So I've seen this thing wal-mart sells. Its a guitar to USB adapter, you plug your guitar in the 1/4th plug, plug the USB cord into the computer, and record your guitar directly to the computer. My question is this. Could I run a multi-track tape deck thru this for mix down on the computer?

not sure, id suggest finding out what the company name is and email them or call them..... you could try asking the guy that works there but he prolly will have no clue

If it is designed for guitar, probably not. Guitars outputs are mono. Multi-track tapes are stereo. You'd either get a signal that is summed to mono, or just the left channel.

You're better off spending more money on an actual USB audio interface designed to do recording. A decent one can be bought for around $100.

if you are serious about your audio projects, don't buy at WalMart. Go to a music store...

Always be weary of DI guitar signals, but as you elaborate,...

No. as the people before me stated, it's a mono plug, and multi-tracks use sterio TRS connections, as it's balanced. uh... you could do the easy apprach and buy a 1/4'' TRS to 1/8'' adaptor amd plug straight into your PC mic input. Or you could go and buy a USB audio-interface. A good example of a USB interface is the M-Audio Fast Track Pro. 2 mic/line channels, phantom (+48v) power, headphone preamps, pads for the imputs, and it inludes Abelton Live 5 lite, all for $249. I use the FTP at home, and haven't had any problems with hardware-to-hardware interfacing yet.
