View Full Version : Gig Photos

Normally I don't do this, but this gig has pics taken by a very talented young photographer, so I thought I'd share just for the art value of the photos.
Yesterday (actually two days ago by now), my little jazz quartet played at backyard BBQ fundraiser for some local political candidates. It wasnt paid work, per se, but we did get a little more than 10 bucks a piece in tips, plus four leads for more work, plus free, professional-quality photography from this kid who's going to be a senior next year. So it was decent quality pay in other words for a gig, not to mention it was generally background music, so we had fun just jamming for a couple hours.
Unfortunately, my right hand's index finger began hurting a lot midway through the first set, and in a different way than from callous/blister pain or tendonitis pain. I think I actually was developing a stress fracture in my finger, and I stupidly played on, making it worse. It was an interesting intellectual exercise, though, in figuring out how to make my solos as least painful as possible (IE, playing less). For example, on my solo for the tune "Footprints", all I did was walked a line in 4 against the triple meter of the drums, which made for a very interesting listen, and yet it still wasn't as many notes as I wouldnt have liked to use provided my health was better.
Anyway, here are some pictures

Anyways, ITT, talk about bass-related injuries, if you wish. I just wanted to share these photos.

Oh yeah, injuries. Well I basically kill people with my magical bass skills.

Sure thing. We'll get a sort of Ornette Coleman double quartet going.

I know what you mean about hurting while playing the double bass. If I haven't played for a while I often end up with hand getting a bit sore, thats when I whip out the bass guitar and finish the gig.
Nice pics by the way, the photographer was pretty good and I hope you find some of your gear.

Its not a question of sore. I can get as sore and blistery as all get out and still man it up to finish the gig. That's the sort of pain that goes away and you're better for it. This is a question of stress fracture - an intense pain in the finger's bone.

oooh I see, that sounds really painful. You should have that checked out by a doctor.

I'm just going to rest it for a few days. I dont have to play upright until a rehersal on monday for a professional lounge jazz trio, so I think I might be good. It's feeling a lot better today.
just curious, how does one constitute this photographer to be "very talented?"

Composition of the shot, capturing of the essence of the moment on film, general emotional invocation, artistic vision.
Of course, if you were the least be educated on photography, you'd know this. KTHX. :p
LOMYALE KOOL.
...
i've taken several classes on photography, i realize the number of different ways you can make it an art form. adjusting the f/stop, changing the shutter speed, using different ASA film and using different grains, manipulating the emulsion, development tricks, etc. and that's just from the technical perspective. yet i've only come across a couple photographers who i felt actually made it art. most of the time...i don't find taking a picture of something to be artistic, though. of course, art, in any form, is entirely subjective; and i've heard you state this multiple times. so MAYBE IF YOU WEREN'T A HYPOCRITE YOU'D KNOW THIS LOLZ KTHX.
by the way, most of the characteristics you named can pretty much be summed up with: "he pressed a button."

Basically, the way I figure it, even though he just pressed a button, I couldnt take pictures this well consistantly like he could, so thats pretty much good enough for me.

the photos arent very good, considering you said they were, the one of the saxophonist could be very good, aither in black and white or a darker shade, but the way the photo was taken doesnt reflect the mood of teh actualy photo.

easy man if he considers the photos artistic then they are artistic. It all depends on ones personal perception of something

If the photographer has actually captured the essence of the gig on film, then I'd say you all need to cheer up. :)
To be honest, it looks like it was taken with a good camera, but not in particularly artistic ways. They're not BAD pictures, just... not as artsy as claimed. :p

What kind of upright are you playing?
Well...I'm actually not quite sure. I bought it from this guy who sells basses from local factories, and he said that the one I got was from one in the Blue Ridge mountains. Beyond that, I'm not sure, it doesnt have any markings or anything. All I know is that it plays very well (with a good setup), and my bass teacher, who's been playing for 30 years, says he can't recall ever playing a better bass made out of plywood.
yeah that one letter was pretty offensive huh?
Highly so, actually, and I take offense to it as well. It's fully one third of the acronym for the Klu Klux Klan. You are a racist, and should be ashamed/permabanned.
hey asshole, i was already fired from my job for being racist, isn't that enough?

No, actually, that's not enough. Racists like you should be shot.
I read that thread, and basically, I dream of having superiors that retarded so I can go ape **** on them. Sucks though, not having an income anymore. Stay strong, brother in arms.

Wait, do I smell something? Yes, I think I do. The sweet aroma of irony.
You can call forum members like myself and EADG dicks based upon when we ocassionally indulge in sarcastic humor. We also do things like write lessons, help out in the beginners forum/theory thread, and generally be helpful, contributing members of the forum which you seem to overlook.

No, I haven't missed the lessons or any of that stuff.
I just think you have a very large ego. Which you do.

it's alright, i'm gonna go talk to this guy tomorrow, see if i can get in on his carpentry gigs...if not, some of my equipment will get a one way ticket to the pawn shop.:amaze:

Oh. OK. Thanks for telling me. After all, you have engaged in actual conversation with me and are very familiar with my personality, enough that you can invariably make the qualified statement that I have a large ego.

I don't even know what this guy is talking about, but second that. HaVIC and I are always helping people out, he's always in the Theory thread, I'm in the Beginner's forum often. He's written some awesome lessons, and I've tabbed about.. 80 (estimate) songs for mxtabs and powertabs.net. He covers topics which are hard to find information on, I tab out lots of songs that are difficult or impossible to find accurate tabs for.
As for the ego thing, I don't find HaVIC has an ego at all, which is surprising when you consider his skill level. I'm still not sure exactly what I did to become a dickhead, I try to be nothing but friendly and helpful. No one else seems to have a problem with us.

I didn't think the photos were that artistic but they are pretty nice, not a big deal either way, sounds like it was a good gig. How old are you these days man? Seems like your well on your way as far as being a musician goes.
To the subtopic that developed, I don't think he's a dickhead at all. He knows a great amount of theory and while I don't think I've heard him play I gather that he's quite good. I've seen him make some real good posts but not any that made me think "hey what a tool this Havic guy is." I dunno what inspired that stuff, though I do have a short memory for the internet.

It isn't a family Christmas portrait... many musicians like to close their eyes when they play.

I hope you don't mind HaVIC5, but I got really bored, and I mean REALLY bored, and decided to mess around with the pics. The originals are not spectacular, but pretty good nonetheless. Some are definitely better than others. :)

I don't know, I like the original pictures a lot. I like the expressions that he caught and everything. Maybe you're not all smiling and rocking out, but I'm assuming this is a jazz band and I think you guys give that jazzy look off real well in these pictures.

sweet photoshop jobs
Those are some sweet photoshop jobs, thanks! And yeah, it was a bitch to play outside. It wasn't quite 108, it was actually in the mid 90's, but Washington DC was built on a swamp, so the humidity is always stifling around here.
Trust us, we weren't bored at all, and like BassIsPrettyCool said, rocking out wouldn't quite be appropriate. It's differant with every musician, and we just happen to be a little more low key than some of the flashier soloists out there. Besides, we were essentially playing background music, so if we got too into it, we wouldn't be doing our job.
How old are you these days man? Seems like your well on your way as far as being a musician goes.
Almost 18. I shaved off my soul patch the day before, so I guess I look a little younger there than in some other photos.

Yea, I know your pain about playing in the heat. I had to play a gig on the 4th of July, and it was about 98F outside. Needless to say, my bandmates and I were all soaked with sweat after the show. But you know what they say, if you're not sweating after a show, it wasn't a good show. :p

The photos are good. The layout of the ppl in it, the angles of the camera, all good stuff. It's not the photographers fault that you look a bit bored :) and the surroundings aren't that fun either.
