I was wondering if it was possible to have a VST plug-in effect running realtime while your recording somthing. If not, I was wondering which programs have that capability. I want to do some really wild stuff on guitar and my keyboard but I don't have any really crazy effects so VST plug-ins are my best bet.
I was wondering if you guys know any great websites where I could get some really nice VST.

You can't do that with Audacity.
I doubt any free recording software will. I have the feeling you can do it with ProTools though.

Alright. Well I'm saving up some cash so I'll look into some different recording software.

I've never really gotten an answer to this, what is RealTime?

RealTime, is it software. When I was saying real time, I was meaning that the VST effect would work while i'm recording and I would be able to hear it, kind of like a stomp box.

Don't go with ProTools. I've used both ProTools and Cubase, Cubase mops the floor with ProTools ;)
With Cubase you can create "FX Tracks". Which is basically a track that is purely effects (VST). You can send the effect to a specific track and turn the monitors of that track on. Then you'll be hearing it live :)

Audacity sucks. Look around download.com.

With Kristal and REAPER, which both are free, you can do that.
But getting sound through a vst-effects in realtime needs an ASIO supporting sound card. With basic soundblasters and integrated cards latency is just too long to play it in realtime.

You can't, actually. Pro Tools is not VST compatible. The software plugin that Pro Tools allows for is called RTAS. VST is much more popular in the freeware market, largely because the licensing allows for lots of 3rd-party development.
The previously mentioned Kristal and REAPER are both VST compatible though. Though REAPER will likely only be free until about August 1, 2006.

You already mentioned that. Additionally, Cubase is not freeware, whereas Kristal and REAPER (at the moment anyway) are.
