Is there a free way to do that? I want to start working on some melodic metal and I don't have a midi keyboard. Is there a free program that I can write synth/piano stuff on?

you want to add keys?
Get some keys....
seriously, its the only way. It'll be next to impossible to manually put in notes on the computer to audio tracks.

Fruity Loops Studio can do that, and you get tons of keyboard sounds. It's not a free program, but you can steal it fairly easy. (or just buy it)

thats not the issue here.....you can get any program to do any keyboard sound for you...
without a Midi controller, however, its next to impossible to actually apply it to an existing song. You have to create a perfect tempo map in the midi, and then handwrite the songs. I usually handwrite midi stuff (i hate using keyboards to write stuff) but thats when its by itself. If your doing it to a recording, good luck!

Well, its really easy as long as you know the tempo of the recording. When I record something, I get the drums done at the right tempo. Then record onto my recording program, then put the mixdown into Fruity Loops and set the tempo the same as the song. Then I just add keyboards sounds and everything. No MIDI controller.
I'm not trying to argue with youor anything, yes it would be VERY hard if you didn't actually write the song or know the tempo. But as long as you know the tempo of the song then it shouldn't be too difficult.

well it also depends on what's been done....
if its been recorded to a click track, then yeah its easier, just have to line up the midi map to the recording. But if it isn't, then it doesn't matter what the tempo it is, it *will* fluxuate, and thus making it more human (I'm not a fan of click tracks). In that case, its next to impossible.

Yes. That is exactly what I did on my newest song. You can use your computer keyboard as a music keyboard. Have a listen (it's during the clean part on No Way Out): shagohod.dmusic.com
