Im sure there has to be a thread about this ,but i didnt see it so sorry about that.
Anyway im just wondering, should everyone physically be able to growl /scream ?? Ive been trying for a while and i just cant do it . I would be a decent singer but i cant scream or growl which is really pissing me off because thats what i really want to be able to do, there are not many metal bands i can think of that their vocalists dont scream at all.
anyones coments would likely be very helpfull.
cheers:chug:

I sound like a cat being castrated if i try to scream. No joke.
Haha damn.
I can't scream, but I get a nice, natural low growl as well as a higher, raspy one.

I bet if i smoked tons I could get a nice growl going.
I have a very deep voice, so I guess that helps my growl. The higher one, I have no explanation for.

damn i was just going to ask do you need a good deep voice for a good growl. Personally i prefer growling usually but it looks liek i wont be able to do that anyway.............. unless anyone knows a way of getting your voice to deepen????

You need to listen to more Metal, there are plenty of bands with all clean vocals which are very awesome. Go listen to some Iron Maiden, Blind Guardian, Metallica, Arcturus, lots of bands have great clean vocals.
You would have better luck in the Jam Session forum, lots of good advice ther e on how to scream and growl.

There's several threads about it in the Jam Session forum (http://www.sputnikmusic.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=10). Maybe you should read those first.
edit: Beaten :( I guess that's what I get for taking my sweet time with things.

Sorry i wasnt sure. But it is a vocal style predominatly used in metal so i figured this was a good place to put it. also it dosnt really have much to do with song writing and the jam thread i presumed would be about gear setups and whatnot.
I deffinatly will try arcturus though, thanks.

I d love to be able to do decent growls . you do need a deep voice for it?
No i dont think his vocals are death growls ,but he dos kid of growl at the part in 'one' wher he sings 'hold your breath' ( i think they are the lyrics,as i said im not a big fan. ) particularly on the hold.

Try different stuff. Maybe your good at guitar, maybe you would like playing piano/keyboards. Maybe you are just practicing the wrong way or looking to the wrong places for influences. I think with some knowledge and a little effort anyone can be decent at an instrument.

If you must insist learning growling. Live in the woods! You'll get the hang of it quickly.
Just use your gut. It's gotta come up. The more air coming up, but better. If you use your throat, you'll kill it.

guitar and bass are the two most alike instruments so if you're not good at one it's likely you're not at the other. try piano or drums.

Back when I went to the guitar forum everytime I thought I made an accomplishment I would see someone on there who has been playing for less and was way better than me. Eventually I came to the realization that if I keep getting discouraged they will always be better than me, so I took that and turne d it into inspiration to get better and practice more, and I think that's why I am the guitarist I am today.

For about the past week I've been experimenting with my death growl development thus far. It's definitely improved as I can now growl the song Where The Slime Live and it's become easier on my throat using the slower growl method Morbid Angel uses on the Domination album. I tried the Opeth growls for the song Ghost of Perdition and it's been difficult getting my voice to sound like that as there are higher notes for those growls. I'll be trying faster growling methods like Nile uses soon. I have a deep voice so maybe that's why my progression has been easier.

How do you make your screams different pitches? I can't really scream low. I'd love to know how. I scream like the number twelve looks like you, or Fear Before the March of Flames.
I'd love to know how to scream like Zao, Finch, and On Broken Wings.
Any tips?
Steerpike
07-20-2006, 07:08 PM
Varying the pitch of your screams is no different than changing the pitch of your clean singing. You need to learn to isolate and resonate your voice in the chest, nasal passages, and head. The head voice is the hardest to get, as men are naturally inclined to speak more from our chests.
It's important to remember not to force it. You should be able to do a scream without a lot of volume and let the microphone do all the amplication for you. Remember also that part of the tone of your voice is going to come from the type of microphone you're using. You need to experiment a bit.

On the first page of this thread I posted my band (which I'm guessing most of you won't like.) Mostly because I just did it to be original. I'm a skinny kid with a normal/semi-high voice and I can get a good death growl or two.
-and if you listened to my music I can do a pretty high-pitched scream that I have coined as my own. I can also do really high-pitched stuff and some medium throaty stuff. If you want to learn how to scream different ways. Try them out.

If you can sing it, you should be able to scream it. Thats what I always say. Any pitch you want to scream you should be able to sing and hold relatively cleanly for a few seconds at least. Other than that, go here http://www.sputnikmusic.com/forums/showthread.php?p=12768301#post12768301
before I start repeating myself, again, for the millionth time. Rasp makes a note a scream. Other than that, you have to be able to sing hard. Unless you just want that cheesy melissa cross type sound.

I dont think so. I mean ,define a scream. A note, usually in your higher voice, thats pushed hard. Even many bass's can hit high falsetto notes sometimes. Many people have trouble getting into head voice, as it is a slightly different feel than chest or falsetto....Some people skip it all together and can't find it. Maybe youre one of them. Chances are youre not though. You should post a sample.

I love anyone's scream. As long as they're actually into it, and not just using techniques to make it SOUND like they're screaming their balls off, it's awesome.
Just yell, and make it pissed off sounding, and you should be good :p
(Though people tell me that screaming as hard/loud as you can isn't good for your vocal cords, so I'd be careful.)
Merkaba, you've heard Animal Cruelty, how are the screams in that band? My friend Carlos has the almost ear peircing one, and I'm the one that has the kind of crack-y sounding scream.

are you talking about inward highs and low, our outward highs and lows, because inward ones will definetly make it lower or higher than natural, and load with the help of a mic. And it can be controlled in such a way where its very understandable.
