The second video was awful. The rest were mediocre. I really strongly dislike his drumming style. There are moments when it works, I think the last video is better than the rest. But, if feels like sometimes he's just trying to fit as many notes into a measure of odd time as he can. His best stuff is when he's not being "mind bending" and playing fairly conventional breakbeat/drumnbass type stuff(which he honestly dosen't pull off that well). Yeah, techincally he's not bad(though he sounds pretty sloppy, that may be intentional). He has potetntial it seems, but I wouldn't go far as to call that the future of drumming by any means.

EDIT: Damn, the last video just got a whole lot worse. There isn't really much melody to the playing, there isn't much coherence, and there's a lot of blazing chops that don't sound controlled. I mean, even listening to free jazz and some of the avant garde noise influenced jazz, and some of the other modern really weird stuff, you'll find it may be hectic and dischordant, but it at least makes an attempt to be musical and interesting, and this stuff is just boring. That's my take after listening to everything all the way through.

That guy is the "Future of drumming"? ROFL

If that's the case, the future's looking awfully bleak.

I don't actually get where future fits into this whole equation.
This seems very 80's to me.

I like to think of futuristic drumming as acoustic d'n'b with a lot of chrome, lazer penal enhancement, animatronic sex machines, spaceships, keytars, neutrality, and sneakers that have LED lights in the heels that flash whenever you step.

Futures lookin pretty grim guys, nows the time to stock up on Rush CDs and drumming books. We can keep this art alive if we try our best.

There was an article in modern drummer about this topic which had insights on what the "pros" thought about where the future of drumming was heading. I must say that it was a great read.

There are some great quotes in that one, check it out if you can...

He is in the most recent modern drummer. I thought his set up was really different.

I get what he is trying to do, but he is trying way to hard.

O yer, i downloaded some of the last viedo, well some of there songs. They are different, but yet good.

Caleb3221

cliffisanarcissist-I don't think so. I personally don't dislike it because it's weird or unconventional, I dislike it because it's boring and sloppy. It's just kind of a mishmash of ideas that I've heard done better by other people in various contexts. I personally feel like much more progress is being made in other areas of music, and even similar music that's done better. I mean, I've been to a few noise shows and enjoyed them, and there are a couple of REALLY far out albums that I really like that have plenty of odd time signatures, distorted guitar tapping, techincal playing, etc. I have no problem with the "genre" that seems to be going for, I just think that these guys have a poorly executed and trite sound.

You know, i COULD say yes to that...

OR I could say that I learnt more in half an hour of talking 1 on 1 with jojo Mayer than any footage could ever show me.

OR I could say that I was actually filming him from about 2 feet away while he played in front of me and about 200 others at a local clinic that I organised.

Or I could say... Nah I think Ive said enough :)
