So i recently started doing the following syncopation method for pages 38-45 or whatever.

Ride cymbal plays the jazz beat
8th Notes played on the hi-hat foot
Everything longer than 8th notes (quarter notes, tied notes, and dotted quarters) are playing on the kick
Snare hand fills in tripled in between the written melody

This is a fantastic way...it's from Alan Dawson's book...has anyone done this one? What other interesting ones have you done?

Excellent, there's just tons and tons of ways to use that book (and others) to orchastrate on the kit.

Other fun things to read given rhythm line on - hats w/ foot while playing a samba, jazz, one drop reggae, etc

Play any notes longer then quarters as hi-hat splashes, play notes shorter then quarters as sizzles (learning to play 8th, doted 8th and 16th note sizzle phrases on the hats is gold!)

wow that last hi-hat one is great, i might have to try that. i really really like working up speed with playing the melody line on the kick, filling in triplet ghost notes on the snare, while playing the jazz beat on the ride and hats on 2 and 4 with the foot, and just flying through page after page.
