View Full Version : Best Compliments You've Ever Received

What the best compliment you've ever had as a bass player? Mine has to be at a gig my band did where we were support one of the areas best bands, they're all really talented, experienced musicians and anything they had to say about our band i'd respect and understand.

Anyway after the gig their guitarist was talking to ours and he compared me to another local bassist in the area who is an absolute god on bass, he said this:
'For every note your bassist plays, that guy plays four, but you bassists note means so much more.'

i was chuffed :)

I will take it as a complement. Was basically wanking around on the fretboard, and the chap did not know any better.

"God DAMN you, you smug git!"

That was really just for the comedy value though - a friend of mine was playing Guitar Hero, and losing. So I grabbed a bass and started to solo along to the song. :p

I recommend it. It annoys the HELL out of people.

there is a local guitar "god" who was my bass instructor for about two years, and he teaches everyone(small town)

and one day a guy comes up to me at school and says that my guitar instructor recomended me as his best student, the guy was looking for a bassist. I take this very heavily cause I saw this instructor once pick up a bass(not his normal instrument) and play hotel california(guitar part) on it.

.... Unfortunately I jest! Hmmm... My compliments are usually just your average ones tbh! I don't have that good a memory for compliments!

Although, when I went into Gamestation and totally kicked arse playing Guitar Hero for the first time, I got a few compliments from people!! Playing bass IS a transferable skill to Guitar Hero!!

I was jamming with my good friend Chris and his friend Nick I just met and they wanted to improv. Chris played guitar, Nick played drums, and I was playing bass. Chris just told Nick to start, then Chris came in, and then I came in. After about a half an hour of improv, Nick goes, "Hey, Gavin, do you go to Berklee or something?"

I felt on top of the world for about 5 hours. :D

"...a ****ing genius"

My band was in this competition in London and some guy from Kerrang was there, that's what he said about me. I don't think I would call myself a genius, I think that was the first time he'd seen a six string bass or something.

no, it was from a bandmate so i guess that adds bias to the equation, but regardless it is real.

EDIT: another good one was when 2 i didn't know came up to me after one of our shows and complimented me on my bass playing (which, IMO, was decent at best) and on my guitar playing (i didn't play anything other than chords with a few cool little tricks that i taught myself to make my playing sound more unique, but i guess they liked it) but the fact that they liked it was pretty cool.

and another time, somebody at a show came up to me and was like "hey! you're in For the High Seas aren't you!" not really a compliment, but the fact the he was interested enough in my band to learn the name and actually think it was cool to see a member somewhere was very satisfying. especially when most of the nicest things anyone ever said about that band were simply "your singer is hot!" and other things of that nature....

i already cleared that up! and to add, my worst, simplest songs were written for that band. my more complex, post-rockish stuff was unfortunately never brought into that band because it didn't fit our style and nobody was really willing to work on anything longer than 5 minutes anyway. so i only brought my straightforward songs to the table and kept my better stuff to myself and i haven't really played it for anybody except a couple non-musicians who liked it but don't know enough about making music to give any real criticism unfortunately.

and sheesh! i get jumped on by two people after making one post!
anyway, another compliment i got a week or so ago was when a friend of mine from my favorite local band (moving past "local" status lately, touring all over US and internationally) asked me when the hell he's gonna hear more of my music, since my band had split. he said he really wanted to hear more music from me, which i took as a huge compliment, since first of all, he is a young guy, just a couple years older than me, doing extremely well off as a musician and making some awesome, unique music.

listen to anything off of the album Loveless by My Bloody Valentine and you'll see. it's noise rock with layers upon layers of distorted guitars/bass, yet it's very pretty sounding, the way they do it.
after hearing that CD i realized noisiness and beauty are very similar.

yes man thats a good album! my band's style is soo different to that though! u cant really link it to that comparison... i suppose im very dischordant and sparse with my playing...i let the rhythms take the lead role and i play the notes that fit the feel. im a bassist that doesnt like to show off but i like to add another edge to the music without the listeners realising

Whenever someone takes the time to e-mail me about how they enjoyed one of my Bass Videos on the net That's alwyas compliment.

When I am asked to teach, or when people come to a show to see me play. They are all compliments.

i get called the freak by a bunch of people. but... well... i dont think theyve seen many GOOD bassists. i can easily name 5 bassists i personally know who i look up to...

also: getting accepted into my latest band. that was a pretty big compliment. pretty major stuff.

id also like to point out how cool bassists are. look at this thread. people RARELY say "yeh man i was playing this awesome solo thing and everybody was like YEH"...

its more like "yeh i was sort of mucking around and some people watched. i wasnt doing anything that good but i guess they thought it sounded okay"

bassists seem to be more modest.

but thats a HUGE generalisation...

did i spell that right?

I often get girls come up to me and be all "Oh man, that's pretty amazing what you did there, where it's all diddlydiddly. You could go places! You got some crazy fingers!" Which is worrying, and sexual harassment! :p

I often get "Didn't know you could get sounds like that out of a bass." in regards to playing chords and very simple slapping.

Once two randoms came up to me and said if they "ever need to kick our bassist out you'll be be the one we call, the rest of the band are alright, but you impress more than anyone, sometimes your stuff is workmanlike, but then you explode into something fantastic, kinda like that guy from Tool."

I was very nice and modest and replied with "Without the band I wouldn't have any opportunity to shine, a band is a whole with a sum greater than its parts. But yeah, I'm the best!"

Once some scottish army fellas got really drunk and kept tellings us to play Busted and Oasis (BARF) so we told them go to take a sexy walk at which point they applauded and left. I think it was a compliment?

Maybe my bass teacher, who is easily the best on the island at bass (about 100000 people I think) saying he had nothing left he could teach me or when I was told by a fellow bassist that I was the best in my high school and I have 2 whole more years left of school. Like Twankie, my best compliment was being accepted into a band. They were just a two piece before me. There were two other bassists they had in mind...one was the guitarists girlfriend who was about the same skill level as me when I was accepted, and a blind guy who is really kickass on bass but had no internal rythem. My drummer was in a band with the blind guy.

It was a little slow going at first but I soon got the hang of it. I owe my skill progression to those two. If it wasn't for them, I'd probably still be rooter and an E beater.

Jeff, Stef...You guys kickass!

happens to me kind of often. a similar thing happened 4.5 years ago, in 8th grade, when there was the voting thing for 8th grade standouts for the yearbook. i've always been really into art, and my friend was like "oh man, you're gonna win!" which i doubted because i knew hardly anyone in my year. strangely, though, being that he was very popular and intimidating, he told everyone he knows to vote for me . next thing i know, i find out that i won!

I have two favourites:
"Are you taking students?"
and
"The universe can't handle someone like you"

Both were from dumbass kids who had just picked up the bass. I don't put alot of stock in what they said.

I was offered an opportunity to go on tour in Europe in several different countries (mind you, I live in the US) with a blues guitarist/singer who I had met an hour before. That was pretty cool.

well, today the band i'm in trialled a singer, and when we where finished and packing up he said "dude, you hold these guys together, everyone feeds from you, it's awesome" which was odd, cause i was cueing myself off the drummer, so technically HE would have been holdinh us together ......

I'm waiting for the hot blonde cheerleader with a nice rack to come up to me and say "Wow thats a big instrument did it take you long to get that good with it?"
then she could compliment my bass :naughty:
lol irl

People say I play pretty fast, since i played guitar for 2 years but put it down permanently to play bass.

One time I was playing cello in a recital. Afterwards a women came up to me and said I had beautiful vibrato. Turned out she used to be a friend of Pablo Casals, so her opinion held a lot of weight.

I could make a crude joke about women and vibrato...but in the interests of good taste, I shall refrain.
