I'm thinking of making the move from stands to a rack...
I've heard some bad things about them in the past (slippage, etc).. and obviously, I dont want one that slips.
I would need it to be able to accomodate 2 bass drums (both 22", though will most likely move down to 20" sometime over the next decade).
I've tried out a gibraltar before... so have looked into getting their double bass rack. http://www.gibraltarhardware.com/index.cfm?fa=detail&mid=264&sid=85&cid=31
http://www.music123.com/Gibraltar-GRS850DBL-Road-Series-Double-Bass-Curved-Rack-i132518.music
I might end up getting it from music123 (I know musiciansfriend is better, but music123 is the only place that ships to NZ).
I have a few questions about them:
How many toms/cymbals can they take, out of the box (so to speak).
Any others recommended.
Thanks drummy people :D

Gibralter's has round bars, and therefore could possibly slip, although I never personally experienced that while I had one for several years. I'm not sure how many clamps it comes with out of the box, probably 4, but you can always get more. Sometimes you can find them cheaper on E-bay.
Pearl's racks have square bars, therefore slippage is impossible. Check those out too.

Maybe look at the ICON. They will never slip, cheaper than gibralter. You may want to get the three side rack with an additional extension. It will pretty much hold every tom, and cymbal and never move.
if i rember where i found it, this guy had and ICON with 20 cymbals and 6 toms on a rack, and he was standing on it(he was a big guy). yea there indestructible

lmao.. i might have to get myself an icon rack now:thumb:

Bill, you never experienced this because its a rumour that in all my experience has never been justified.
The Gibraltar rack is awesome. If its slipping, its because youve overtightened the clamps and work them down.
Ive just recently retired my Gibraltar rack after 15 years of use - Not a single problem with it.

Thanks for the info. It does seem logical to me that square bars dont slip though (and the price difference is nice :))
One thing though, would Pearl fit Tama toms? (their starcast mounting system).
Are there any brands Pearl (or Gibraltar) wouldn't support (tom mounting wise)?

^^^I think that's what I was trying to say, although badly! I'm with you Damo (although I have a Pearl now).

Don't quote me, but the drum guy at Long and Mcquade told me the other day that Tama stuff is intentionally made bigger, that way people with Tama gear must buy Tama and cannot buy generic. I'm not sure if that holds true for everything, but he said that most generic stuff is not compatible with Tama hardware.

^^ thats got to be untrue. I've seen tama kits on icons (mine will be like that soon)
I think it depends on the mounts you buy

:O
Interesting. I can imagine Pearl gear not being useable with Tama. But I know for a fact Tama drums will work with Gibraltar (I've seen it many times)...

It's just what the drum guy at the music store told me when I bought my china and a stacker for it (cause he was out of arms, and I was to cheap to go for another stand). I asked if it was compatible with all cymbal stands and he said generic stuff liek gibraltar is compatible with everything except for tama.

My next rack will be graphite or carbon fiber, dependingonth style and color I want. That's really the way to go if you got the money. That with a drumf rame if you really are loaded.

Josiah... Once again, you have posted a comment that is completely beyond me, and demands further questioning:
1) Graphite?
2) Carbon Fiber?
3) Dependingonth? You made that one up to confuse me didn't you!
4) Colour?! wait ignore that one... think i understand it
I'm guessing you're talking about something custom made? Not your stock Gibraltar/ICON?

I know number 3 is "depending on the". And there are a few companies that make racks like that, they just aren't usually sold in GC and most other stores.
And, you will definatley be happy with either a gibralter or an Icon if those are what you're going between. I personally got the ICON because it felt slightly more solid to me(The rack itself, not the clamps or anything else). When fully tightened, I literally cannot move any part of it. I can push it, stand on it, etc, and it stays solid. Gibralters are solid too, but the pearl was just a little moreso. But, I'd like to point out that I couldn't even make the gibralter clamps slip, so that won't be a problem as has been stated. A gibralter rack to accomodate a double kick kit may be more readily avaliable, but it wouldn't be difficult to secure an extension bar for an ICON either.
So, basically, you're two deciding factors will be stock and preferance.

I'd say either go for a Pearl DR-503 bar which looks like....

[EDIT]
And this is how it would roughly look like for a double bass kit!

Jos, I emailed the main guy at Marcato racks to see what he could do for me. I agree - Its the best thing I could think of, but too pricey, and constantly on the rise.

Ooh sweet Damo, I would be intersted in heaign what they come back to you with. My experience has also been rising prices, the weight and some of the custom aspects are very tempting though.

Thanks again for all the info people... I'm might be reconsidering getting a rack, and gettting some cymbals or something... maybe shallower toms... not too sure at all tbh. Anyhow, thanks for all the help, if nothing else its been an interesting plunge into the world of solidity.

If you're gonna go gibraltar you might as well get a dixon rack...EXACT same thing... EXACT, but much cheaper...

I feel that way about the PDP racks as well.
