Alright Im gonna start this thread so that alot of new drummers can look here and find out what some commonly mentioned things are so that they dont have to post a new thread and have people flame them and what not. Anyways I'll start off with a small list of things I knew that kinda confused me when I started drumming. And I will also put a place where you can find places to learn about them further.

Accent-An accent is a note played with more power and louder than regular notes.

BPM-Beats per minute.

Drum Solo- A drum solo is when the drums are the focal point of the music. It is the main part of the music at the time.

Gravity Roll-Single-handed snare roll utilizing the snares rim.http://www.tigerbill.com/media/Rabb2.wmv

Half Note-A note having one half the value of a whole note(two notes per measure). For musical notation help you can go to

Heel-Toe-Heel toe is a technique used with your foot, in which your foot rocks back and forth.http://www.sputnikmusic.com/lesson.php?lessonid=160

Heel-Up-This is a technique used for your bass drum or High Hat in which your heel is not touching the pedal.

Metronome-A device used to help musicians keep time in their playing. It produces a constant, evenly spaced beep at whatever speed you choose to set it to.

Parradiddle-A pattern of drumbeats characterized by four basic beats and alternating left-handed and right-handed strokes on the successive primary beats. Paradiddles can be found here: http://www.vicfirth.com/education/rudiments.html

Quarter Note-A note having one-fourth the time value of a whole note(4 Notes per measure)

Repeat- A repeat signs simply means to play the measure again.

Wait. You were confused by "rest" and "drum solo?"

Sorry. But after 4 years of playing the trumpet [and little spouts of other failed instruments], things like that seem kind of...silly. Ah well. Gotta learn some time, I guess.

Some of the links for some of those are in other threads floatin' around here..

It's not true that no other instruments (or noises) play during a drum solo, it's just that the focal point is on the drums during its solo. And I'm not sure if it's wise to categorize popular drummers into 'skill level they play at'. The flam definition is rather vague, and you spelled paradiddle wrongly twice.

Gravity Blast-Single-handed snare roll utilizing the snares rim.

Thats....not true?

That's a gravity roll...a gravity blast is when you do a gravity roll and add double bass and hi-hats/cymbals.

No way man, this is a GREAT idea for a thread!

Just one suggestion: For Martin Lopez, you should change the reccomended listening to "The Drapery Falls", just because it has bits of melodic soft stuff and harder metal stuff. "In My Time Of Need" is a great song, it just doesn't fully show off his talent :chug:

Good thread Lep!

I was looking at all the lingo (some i didn't knwo before likeHeel-up which i apparently am) and it reminded me...

does anyone move they're foot on the bass pedal to get different sounds? cause if i'm just playing a straight forward beat i'll have my foot on the front of the pedal but if i'm groovin' or playing to something that has a fast bass pattern i'll move my foot the the back of the pedal (kinda at the joint at the heel) to make it buzz or do two fast notes?

(long question)

Leprechauns1021
08-13-2006, 10:11 AM
I dont really move my foot forwards or backwards, but I do utilize heel up or heel down to get different sounds. If I want it softer I play heel down, if I want a louder sound I go for Heel up. I also use heel up when i need to play some straight 16th notes, or just really fast bass pedal work.
