Ok, it seems like everytime someone gets new snare heads, they mess it up. I just got a whole set of new heads, so I want to make sure I do it right. I know about the tuning bible, and this might be on there, but what do you do with the snare wires when you change the reso head. Do you loosen them and dissengage it or what?

This should help:

When I tune my snare, I'll take the wires off completely, tune the snare (batter and resonant side), then re-install the wires.

I take mine right off too. I also clean the drum thoroughly inside, cause it usually is collecting all sorts of dust bits...

i take it completely off usually. IMO gibraltar snare wires are the best. they are...how do you say....non gimmicky. =). I clean the shell and then just start by putting the head back on.

When I reskin I tighten all the screws, vaseline up the tension rods, clean the drum inside and out and inspect all the bearing edges and look for warpage of any kind.

Then its all standard procedure, seat, reseat, rough tune, fine tune, clean.

Yeah, what Pitchfork said, but its the tuning but im useless at, i just cant get the sound im looking for. Does anyone know if drum centres or stores will tune drums in for you or your local store does?

Read the tuning bible. Make sure to tighten the heads in VERY SMALL increments when fine tuning. Also experiment with your snare tuning for a while to see what it is capable of.

Out of all your drums you should probably know your snare the best since it is going to get the most usage and is the centerpiece of the drumset.

What snare do you have and what heads are on it?
What sound are you looking for?

I'm sure a drum shop/music store would do it....at a cost

I do the same as Zildjian.
