dude thats a reeeeeeeeeeeeel big teach man... and the BEST thing to do is find a somebody locally who can help you out, there are so many variables and little things withen the technique which would make it extremely hard to teach someone over the internet...
sorry if i destroyed your hopes man but the best thing to do is sit down with someone who knows what their doing and move that way...:thumb:

Check out some slapping videos on Youtube or Googlevideo, and emulate their style
Good luck man, easiest stuff to start on is Chili Peppers (for songs) and scales, remember to go slow and use proper technique

slapping invovles a lot of stuff. its not just thumping and plucking and it can get pretty complex once stuff starts getting advanced, i still think that its best to learn in person with someone who can interact with you :)

dude, learning to slap via the net is one of the hardest things to do, like the guys above have already said, and get a local bass player to show you :thumb:

My friends learned in about 3 weeks from me, it took me like half a year to learn on the net, but it will sink in more.

Or just try out. It's not that hard. With a bit of testing and experimenting on two band rehersals I could lay down simple slap lines.

When I first started out, one of my friends(guy who gave me my first bass..how nice:) ) told me that slapping is pretty basic...just stick your thumb out, point it towards the head and twist your wrist so your thumb essentially bounces off the string. Popping soon followed that naturally due to the way my hand moved after a good slap.

Not THAT hard, thats how i had to learn was various articles and videos and my technique isnt horrible, so yes it is plausible to learn from the internet.

I've learned some through the net, but my technique is terrible really.....If you really want to learn, get somebody who can teach you personally, be it a friend, a relative, a teacher (good option) or a cow...

Self Taught slapping techniques are the absolute worst kind of self taught techniques. Slap Bass is way to complex to figure out on your own.
Good Luck:thumb:

How can slapping be too complex to figure out? How do you think it got started in the first place?
bassmancrv
07-19-2006, 08:26 PM
its not really that complex at all.. i learn on my own in maybe a week, sure it was sloppy at first, but it got cleaner
i used to think it was impossible because it looked so fast in videos, but if you slow it down its really not hard
just try slapping octaves at first trying to make the thump sound like a thump and not a mute ( that was hard for me at first ) then focus on pulling the string out and letting it bounce against the fret board for the pops
once you got that just run through some simple paterns
G------------------------------3h4
D-----5-----3-----5----3---------
A---------------------------------
E---3---x-x---x-x---x-x---x-x-----
RHCP- skinny sweaty man ( i think )
G------------------------------
D--------2----------5--------7
A-----------------------------
E---0--0------3--3-----5---5
RHCP- Higher ground
those are some easy paterns i can think of off the top of my head..
just have fun with it, and remember what gives you the slap sound... making the strings bounce off the frets ( thinking that way helped me alot)
good luck

it might be... haha these were all off the top of my head.. and with no bass in the room

There's one note missing. Obviously the timing can't be spot on since it's in tab form. :)

It's hard to tab a song off the top of your head, for me atleast. That's what my guitar pro tab says anyway.

07-19-2006, 08:49 PM
yea thats right.. damn both my attempts to help out were wrong..
oh well.. those "licks" will serve their purpose of helping a fellow bassist learn to slap

Don't feel bad, we all mess up from time to time. I can't slap though, I think I have too high of a string gauge. I can't bounce off the strings and it's hard to pop, but I don't feel extremely pushed to learn it at this time.
bassmancrv
07-19-2006, 08:56 PM
hmm unless your string gauge is really really high.. it shouldnt limit you from slapping.. what gauge are they?
MyFriendOfMisery
07-19-2006, 09:23 PM
They are .105 on a crappy squire with a pretty high action, trust me its a pos to try to slap on. The strings are pretty tight for standard guage which is good for fingerstyle.

Keep at it, it will take a while to get down good. There are a lot of differing opintions on what is proper techneque. IMO if you slap through the string and come to a rest on the string below (eg slapping the E you would come to rest on the A string), it is much easier to get a good sound and it is just as fast. That is just my opinion, do what works best for you.

Thank you. They are Elixers and they aren't completely dead yet, although I got them right before christmas. Their nerves are still twitching so they will stay on a little longer. I got another even crapier bass that I may put some lighter gauge strings on to learn with, that way I can use the squier for fingerstyle.

Just be careful what sort of slapping you search for :)
I'm still trying to figure out how to make slap bass on my fretless sound any good ... just doesn't sound the same without frets :(
