okay, so now that mxtabs is gone, most probably for good, and I'm getting really diverse in my listening habits, and listening to stuff nobody would ever tab on the net, I've been 'forced' to start playing stuff as I hear it. Trouble is, I pretty much suck bollocks at it. Does anybody have any tips to help me out? I've heard that boosting certain frequencies on your stereo/pc can help, but so far I haven't found anything that helps.... thanks guys :thumb:

If im listening out to either tyhe bassline or guitar or something, i find puttin one earphone in at a time helps.. if that makes sense. I foudn that on some tracks, guitar is thru one ear, and bass thru another despite u cant hear it normally.

listen to the music with your headphones, it makes easier. also do it gradually, like for example when i started learning songs by ear i started with easy songs like Under the Bridge or something by The Meters that the bass doesn't do much technically and is easy to hear. do a series of easy songs and try to step it up a notch every time.
If you use Windows Media Player or Musicmatch, they both have a graphic equalizer which you can use to boost the bassline and cut everything else. If the bass is in one side, you can also adjust the pan.

I have found one of the best and cheapest ways is to put in ear plugs and then listen to what you are trying to learn thru headphones. the ear plugs block out all the high Hz while still letting you hear the low ones.
I find using the EQ on Winamp 5 to be very effective.
Also using a good set of headphones also helps isolate the bass frequencies more once they are boosted, considering air is one of the worst conducters of sound.
(Theory behind it, is to minimise the distance the soundwave has to travel through the air to reach your ear.)
