Strings: Light->Medium

Hey everyone. Been practicing on and off since I started the bass this summer. I put new strings on when I got it; I think they were Boomers (light gauge so my fingers got accustomed to it). My question is, does going to medium gauge strings affect the sound? I would assume that going with thicker gauged strings will make a lower pitched sound than the lighter gauged strings. Is this correct? Any thoughts on when to transition from light to medium gauge? And what strings to go with (if type/brand makes much of a difference).

It wont be lower pitched, but it will sound fuller, and more rounded

The strings won't sound lower, though the tension should be more and they will sound fatter as such.
