Playing bass, i already play guitar, so i probably already have some sort of idea what it's like but what really cheap bass, not a squier, i've used those and i hate them, can i buy?

I'm going to be cliche and ask the usuals.

What is your budget, how many strings are you thinking about, and what styles of music will you be primarily playing?

Budget is no more than 140, and the style i want to play is mostly rock, punk and maybe even a little funk-ish stuff. I love Flea's style alot.

a copy precision or jazz would be fairly well rounded, and you can pick some up for really cheap.

just for curiosity, what currnecy are you talking about? the idea of picking up a bass for $140AUD is totally obsurd (sp?)

The only bass I can think of new for under that price is a Dean Edge 09.

If you shop used you may be able to get a Washburn, OLP, or a nicer off-brand....

$140 is EXTREMELY limiting.

Yes I have, and for the budget you quoted it fits in with that.

SX is by no means High End. But you did say that you did not want to go near Squier and you other choices (in that price range)are Rouge and Brice, neither of which I have played, and neither of which has the best reputation in this forum.

So my general feeling was that for US$140 (I am assuming you were quoting US) SX is worth a look. If however you could increase your budget a bit more a greater number of more "recognisable" and better basses/brands would be available to you.

Cool cool. It's nice to hear someone recommending SX that's actually played one for a change.

I can understand where you are coming from, often people read a review about something and entirely make up their minds about it that way rather than actually getting out there and trying the stuff.

As said, SX is designed an an entry level bass with nothing hugely fancy included, but the build quality is pretty good and and the fact that they will on some of the basses, use ash for the body, does give them appeal.

I am actually considering picking up one and using it a practice bass for getting into modding and lutherie.

EDIT: Crap, I just realised that you were not the threadstarter. I just got a little uptight there as I thought it was a bit stupid of someone to come in and ask for help, then shoot down peoples ideas when he/she asked for them in the first place. Sorry about that.
