I don't know to much about Keyboards, but I'm intrested in a large array of sounds. I had a roland guitar synth, but it just didnt satisfy me, because I want to play my guitar, then switch to keyboard off and on during a riff or song. Just to give you guys a good general view what I am looking for and the sounds, I'll name some bands who have used keyboards/synths in their music.

King Crimson
Tool
NIN

Hope that gives you the idea what type of keyboard/synths I'm looking for.

also, is there a known keyboard that will let you warp the sounds, like adjust the whole frequcey. I think they are called modulators, but I'm not sure. Like I said, I don't know **** about this just asking for some keyboard/synth help.

Just to give you more of an idea, hear this.

Man the people here suck, you expect with all those members on every single day they would at least answer your thread.

I've been wanting to get a microKORG lately it's a really nice little synth, although it only has like two or three octaves so it's more of an instrument for creating sounds than for actually playing.

yes I heard that about the microKorg to, if getting a 37 key, i would say to get the Alesis Micron, it's only 400$

The Roland Juno-D might be good for you, i rarely hear the keyboard in NIN i dont really listen to them vthough, and i never hear synth in tool and ive actaully never heard king crimson. but the roland juno-d is if you want newer sounds and not the classic synth like stuff from children of bodom, unless your looking for sounds like that then i would get the Korg X5D or although i havent tried it yet the Korg X50.

???? NIN is predominantly keyboard. If it were stripped down to just the live instruments, you'd know. Tool uses it very sparingly, listen to Reflection, a few tracks on 10000 days too.
Not to hijack...ok, hijacking anyway...are there synth programs that can be controled via keyboard, and how would it be connected to the computer (laptop), or would I be better off getting a physical keyboard and running it into my line in to record?

What do you mean a MIDI controller?

Maybe. I'm midi ignorant though, except for knowing I don't have midi inputs....ooh, unless the inputs on my podxt count. But would I be able to control a synth program that way?

Software synths are getting better every year and are usually a cheaper alternative.

Reason has two good synths that range from simple bass and lead sounds, to pretty sounding pads, to spacey effects. Especially the Malstrom can make some real crazy atmospheric sounds, which is quite suitable for the type of music you described.

A lot of MIDI controllers can also be connected with an USB cable, so you don't even need a MIDI interface.

M-Audio makes very affordable controllers with tons of features (knobs and sliders that can be assigned to functions in the software) but the quality is dodgy at best. The Korg Kontrol 49 on the other hand is supposed to be very good, and integrates flawlessly with Reason... i might buy one of those soon. It's like $400 though.

I was just hearing some samples and I like that as well. Very intresting sounds. I'm really looking forward to creating my own sounds and moding them how I like it. I like the abnormle sounds that it presents. I'm just looking for something deep, scary, and unique.

I forgot to mention that since 3.0, Reason has a new device called the Combinator. That thing lets you group several instruments and effects together into one and save it as a new multi-device, including all settings and wiring. Then you can use that not just as an instrument, but also as an effects processor — there's an audio input on the back. The factory sound bank comes with a bunch of such instruments and effects, some of which are really bizarre. I'm sure you'll like it.
