You don't need to bump it after 11 minutes man.
Go to a local store that sells used stuff. I got a Fender Deluxe Precision Special for $200 after tax.

I just bought my Epiphone Thunderbird IV Reversed Bass today. It was 429.00 with tax in the US.

There is no "Best bass" but Fender, Ibanez, Cort, Schecter and Yamaha all make pretty decent basses around that price.

If you used the search function, you may be able to find 20 threads that have to do with "the best bass for $400." There's a number of threads like this every day.

I would suggest going and trying a buttload of basses, even some that you can't afford. Try everything from the crappy Squire to the custom Warwick's. This will help you decide whether it's worth it to blow your $400 on a new bass right now, or wait a few months and save a few hundred more and buy something that you will be happier with for longer.

What is a rock sound? Pretty much, you've narrowed it down to almost any popular music in the last 50 years.

I would spend just a little extra and get yourself a nice MIM Fender Jazz. Just my two cents though.
