im looking to get a sound similar to old casualties or new a global threat and i've been tooling around with my amp trying to find a good sound but can't seem to find what im looking for. so i'm wondering if i need to get a distortion pedal or if its possible to get a decent distorted effect with the settings on my amp.

i'm currently playing a peavey nitrobass head and the basic EQ/effects are pre-gain, contour, lows, mids, mid-shift (don't know exactly what it does), highs, and volume.

The only way to get a good distorted tone out of a head without effects is overpowering the cab, I believe. You can boost the lower mids to get a growl but that's not quite the same. Try that out, but if you want a really distorted tone, I'd get a pedal.

Mid-shift I believe lets you select the group of frequencies that are considered your mids.

nice, i just clicked into that the other day when i actually read the numbers on my head, haha.

as for pedals, i was looking at either the BOSS ODB3 overdrive pedal or the digitech bass driver. i couldn't find decent reviews on the digitech and i know BOSS makes some solid equipment, but what would you suggest?
