For around the same price, you can get a LTD B or F series bass, which is much more suitable for metal music

Personally I would go sub but I haven't ever tried a schecter stilleto so I can't really comment there.

I would probably go the Schecter the SUBs have always felt a bit cheap to me.

i say scehcter, more versatile in tone, feels better IMO, and also has a great slap sound

SUB's sound good, but try one out. They lack the arm cutaway of most basses, so they feel sort of weird. Other than that they are pretty sweet.

arm cutaway? do you mean elbow contour?

That's the word. I didn't know what it was called.

I wouldn't go S.U.B. for a metal band, but that's just my opinion. If it were me I'd get the Schecter, such a nice bass.

Definitely the Schecter.

A guy I know plays a SUB 4 string in a hardcore/metal band, it cuts through really well and sounds great with slap.
Ok I have the Studio 5... I don't care what anyone says, it lacks low end. I have to keep the bass pot on almost full if I want a bassy tone. In my band, I keep it on full almost all of the time. It is very versatile in tone, yes, but the natural flat sound is not very bassy.
I don't know the spacing of the SUB, but I'll warn you now and say that the Studio is not very comfortable to slap on, in my opinion. The spacing is tight, and the space between the string and body is really deep. You can get a nice slap tone easily though, especially with the useful mid control.

did that guy just say they LACKED in low end?? are you serious?I couldn't agree with him more. For a nice full, bassy tone, Schecter is not what you want. IME they produce a much more modern, hi-fi sound which, however you EQ it, is still there in some shape or form.
To threadstarter:
Have you considered any other basses?
Edit: A few I had a quick look at which might suit your purposes.

But if you have your heart set on thse 2 and want to decide (I recon you already have and are just wanting to see if people agree with you) I would take the Musicman.

The Schecter is built to a much higher quality than the SUB. The truck bed liner finish on the SUB is better suited for speaker cab's and, well, truck beds as well.

Isn't that just the pickguard? If so, you can change it.

well the elite 5 i played had plenty of lows while the knob was flat, then again i've only played two schecters in my life, and both of them once or twice

I own a Schecter Elite-5, it's my second bass and I've been playing for 2 years so far. My first bass was an Ibanez SR300DX for around $300.
So far... my Schecters been real nice, the low tones are fine if you ask me. I keep the knob around half and I have a nice bassy sound, but when its flat it sounds more... trebly(?). Anyway, if the Studio's anything like the elite I'd say get the schecter... a SUB doesn't sound so great.

No, the pickguard is a faux diamond plate steel. Ugly as sin, plus a textured finish on the body, much like spray-on truckbed liner.

Tone-wise, SUB.
Feel-wise, Schecter. The necks on the 5-strings are amazing, IMO.

tonewise, sub!?
i found it to be very one-dimensional

I've gotten to the point where I find versatility useless, if you don't like any of the tones you get.
I like the SUB tone. Can it get something completely different? No. Do I need something completely different? No. Does it fit any genre? Although some people don't imagine jazz being played with it, I do it. Why need another tone?

well i guess that's what seperates me from you...
me I like to have versatility, even if i have 2 or 3 out of a million sounds that i would actually use and like

I don't like the finish on the body either. I suppose you could sand it down and repaint.. then a new pickguard.. you'd be in business.

For the price/time/effort it'd take to do that, you could find a nice second hand 'Ray.
