Is there anything i can do about these places where i sanded too far in?

Also, to what depth should i be sanding? After i get all the paint off i can barely see the grain of the wood but if i sand a bit further it looks much better but how far?

the parts that you say you sanded too far in seem to be the depth that you should have sanded all around. but i don't know much about refinishing so don't quote me on it.

All you did was sand into the sealer. If you're doing a natural finish, you wanna get rid of this anyhow. Otherwise you can just spray sealer again.

right, so i should keep sanding even further? the wood looks better down there anyway.

but i've noticed when im taking off the paint it leaves really cool almost zebra striping (alternating black and bare wood) so i wonder if i could alternate sealer/bare wood..

probalby a terrible idea as it would affect the staining process i imagine.

also, i found some laquer remover in my garage.

doesn't work at all. ugh

also, look at pick # 3 and 4 and how the wood of the contour is so grey , whats up with that?

The wood in the contour is a different wood than the tops. Theres a veneer over it.

Jiffy

And apparently I sanded through it?

The veneer that is...

Is that a Yamaha RBX... i opened this thread and was like "hmm i didn't post these". Looks exactly like mine. But yea, you need to sand to that level all around, the wood is nicer, trust it.

Nah, the veneers are pieces of wood that sandwich another piece of wood. The veneer is about 1/36th or less of an inch thick. They just go on the faces of the guitar, not the sides or in the contours or anything like that.

What kind of guitar is that? It looks just like my first sand-down job... and I saw the veneers, and I was like wtf? I pretty much did the same thing as you, haha.

Veneers are VERY thin. If you're going to be coating it a color, it's fine. Just sand the whole thing off.

07-19-2006, 06:11 PM
yea i refinished a fender strat ad had the same problem.... they put a vanier on the wood and you just have to sand down onto the real wood so it all looks like the spots tht u think is sanded down too far...

the fact that they put tht on there pissed me off... cuz i thought i had it all sanded off then i went and stained and the stain couldnt get through the vaneer only the little spots where it was sanded down enough so it looked like this

http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/ambienceistheband/07-02-06_2338.jpg

after i sanded it down past the vaneer the stain went on very even and it came out great

Thats a really good looking finish though.

they are just stock inlays that came wit the stock neck... i modified the head stock though

when i scalloped the 12th down the inlay on the right part of the 12th just got scalloped off...

i will eventually buy a new neck... this one does fine for now

The best bet if you could get hold of it would be to use a router for the flat pieces of the guitar, i.e. front and back.

You can set the depth to which the router cuts/bores and thus get an even finish/depth throughout. You must however be EXTREMELY careful when doing this.

Otheriwise just stick to the sander.

GuitarMaggot

I've never actually heard of a guitar being painted without a coat of vaneer, it makes it stick better and helps with the shine too I think.

Jiffy

yeah i ended up sanding all the way down to the areas that i thought i messed up on and yes it was the area i should go down to, it looks much better, now i just have to do the edges. which SUCKS AND IM SICK OF SANDING!

edit: i think in one area on the edge i went through the veneer and the wood is really grey like on the contour.

whats the veneer made of?

Veneer is wood, most likely maple.

yeah guitarded i ended up evening it out like moghes told me to and you cant even notice that place where i messed up. now my issue is im going through the veneer. and nipples i think thats what it looks like. its darker then the maple? veneer.

Nipples
07-25-2006, 05:01 PM
Yeah, its most likely maple veneer.

dudeness
07-27-2006, 01:59 AM
there is no veneer it is
A. a strat
B. painted
sand throught the sealer
and sand up and down with the grian
looks like you werent doing that in some places
and use a block on the flat parts
like a peice of wood with spray adhesive on it then put the sandpaper on

and for the sides use a thin rubber block
on the curves use your hand

use 120 grit to get of the paint and sealer
then work all the way up to 800 grit to get rid of the scratches

that is the most horrible finish of all time
he stained the friggen neck

it looks like he didnt even sand it then buff it

wtf is a coat of veener

a veener is a peice of wood glued to another

the thinner of which is called the veener

veeners can be any thickness
i just built a guitar with a 1/8 veener

hhaha yeah seriously i could've crammed all that into one post in a jiffy.

its going alright. i went through the maple veneer into the alder at some points. but i just started staining today.

getting the sealer off the contours was a bitch and i have polyurethane all over my hands which sucks.

my dad suggested i put paint remover on it which was a terrible idea because i have cuts all over one of my fingers.

but, i should be done by wednesday and probably will put pics up.

p/u?

i used a palm sander at times on the big open areas.

i would say its about a 50 50 with my use of palm sander and by hand.

the curves by the neck took ages which are singlehandedly responsible for making me wish to never do this again

Amen brotha, those curves by the neck take for-effing-ever. Especially when you sand against the grain to start the go back sanding with the grain, dee-yam.
I love the white pick-guard against the natural finish, looks damn good man. Everytime i open these threads it makes me more excited for mine to be done. T-Minus one week. I pray.
Good job mate.

EADG: Yeah I almost used another finish because i thought it would be too dark. it turned out much lighter than on the can
