I recently bought a synth to plug in my computer and I am now looking for programs/sounds. Ideally I would like a program with a large selection of sounds or a programs where I could import sounds. I can only seem to find programs with few sounds and sounds like guitar imitations and drum machines....

I hope someone can help me.
Thx

you should pirate Fruity Loops 6.8 XXL. Although It's the only music composition/midi Program I've used, so I don't know how it compares to others. But you'd probably like it, It has tons of sounds, and you can import sounds, too.

Try Reason.

Reason is what I use and I love it so much. It has great effects and tons of samples, loops and patches come with the program. It's a little pricey, but well worth it, in my opinion. Unfortunately, it looks like Propellerhead took the free demo off the site.

Oh well.

I would highly recommend FM7, Native Instruments' emulation of the classic Yamaha DX7 digital synthesizer. It's the only virtual instrument I've really dug.

^ yes the FM7 is really good.
The downside is that making your own patches requires a technical knowledge that's somewhere between rocket science and nano technology :p It's so intimidating, it makes me feel stupid. But luckily it comes with a whole lot of stock patches and there are several expansion packs available. And it does sound great.

Other software synths that i've tried and liked, are the Native Instruments Absynth, the Arturia MiniMoog, the LinPlug Albino, the Arturia Modular Moog (even more intimidating than the FM7, but sounds awesome), the GMedia impOSCar, the Arturia ARP2600, the Arturia CS-80V and the Korg Legacy Collection.

The Absynth is the best for really weird ambient sound scapes. It's the most alien sounding synth i've heard.

For those old-school analog type sounds, nothing beats a vintage hardware synth, but the MiniMoog, Modular Moog, ARP2600 and CS-80V do a good job emulating it. I think my favorite is the MiniMoog.

Note that some of these aren't available as stand-alones, but require a program that supports VST plugins, such as Cubase, Ableton Live or Acid.

This is true, but what's handy on FM7 is its "randomize" function, allowing you to generate wild tones beyond the presets without having to actually get into programming.

What would be a good program for creating a patch somewhere along the lines of Jens Johanssons sound?

This was on his wikipedia page:He has used many types of keyboards and synthesizers throughout his career. Amongst his favourites are the Korg Polysix, Yamaha DX7 (from the Rising Force times to present), the Oberheim Matrix Series and the Roland JV-1080.The Native Instruments FM7 would be perfect, being a DX7 emulator. The Korg Legacy Collection has a Polysix emu, but imho it isn't nearly as good as the FM7.
