First of all, I don't know much about this in the first place so if the question seems stupid tell me nicely, heh.

I want a nice chunky metal tone. Something from an EMG. However sometimes I want to play a tone that's pretty distorted but all the notes are nice and clear, like Adam Jones' tone. Would I be able to accomplish this with like an EMG in one place and then some other pickup in another position to get the "Adam Jones" kind of tone?

Do you think EMGs can produce that Adam Jones type of tone? If so I have no problem going with EMGs, I just don't want to be stuck with thick muddy tones because of the pickups.

since when were EMGs thick and muddy? I've just put some in my bass and they're crisp and bright as the sky out the window. find out what Jones uses, I think he's got a les paul, and then do some research into what pups sound like those in a LP. Also, I think the body of a les paul has something to do with the tones you can get out of them, but then, I play bass, not guitar, and wouldn't know :p

adam jones uses a jb/jazz on his les pauls.

he uses a diezel vh4, and i think he used, or uses a mesa dual rectifier aswell.

i read somewhere that he used them at the same time with an old marshall bass amp, but then i read an interview that he only used the diezel on 10,000 days.

edit: dont expect to buy a jb, and get his tone tho, most of it is gonna be comeing from his $6000+ amplifier.

JB can get quite brutal and it still retains clarity.

i was gonna get a jb, but then decided against it. i wish i could try one, but i can't.

i read this thread on hc when mx was down, and it was all these people saying how trebly, and thin, and bassless it is, and i'm aiming for pretty much the opposite of their descriptions of it.

but that diezel is apparently a pretty bassy amp, so that probably makes up for the lack of bass in the pickup (if these hc descriptions are true)
