What do you use to paint guitar/bass bodies? Paint..not stain.

there is a few types of paint you can use. The two main types a diy'er would use are nitrocellulose lacquer or an auto spray.

Nitro wears off over time though, which gives the guitar a vintage look if you play it often and for a long time.

Quick hijack, I'll be respreying my body, should I use a primer? And secondly, would I just use cans of spray-paint? Or should I sparay it with a differerent type of paint?
Cheers.

For best quality, I would use a paint gun with compressed air. You COULD use cans of spray paint though.
I don't recommend spray paint. It tends to look cheap.

can you just use furniture lacquer to finish a bass body? (if you can't, it's too late for me)... I have some polyurithane, but i already finished my body with lacquer.... shoul di have used the poly?

Thats the current state, I dont like the matte finish, I think Im gonna do it in gloss.
PS, it will look cheap if the person who's doing it is missing a chromosome.

yes. the paint you're going to spray won't stick to the paint that's from the factory.

i don't see what's wrong with furniture laquer- guitars and furniture are made from the same thing. the kind of clear you use depends on what kind of finish you want: poly for factory finishes, nitro for vintage finishes (with yellowing + general wearing down and aging), tung oil for a luthier-look, etc.
a general tip: DO NOT start sanding odwn your instrument until you are SURE you want to do it. sanding takes A LOT of time and patience (espeically with the horns). i recommend a good paint stripper.

The truth, sanding takes forever, I recommend a detail sander so you can get all the finish off before pouring on the paint stripper like there's no tomorrow, my bass is nearly naked now thanks to Nitromors!

Not true.
As long as you sand all of the clear coat off, the roughed up paint will act as a primer.

I would recommend a white primer for any color besides black, unless you're going for some sort of pearl or working with transparent colors, in which case it would depend on what you're trying to do.
