I was at a show about a week ago and the drum kit some of the bands used looked really small. I don't play drums but I just thought it was odd looking and maybe some of you guys could help me figure it out.

Figure what out? That made no sense really.

Maybe they were really poor kids that couldn't afford anything but a junior set?
Maybe they bought a jazz set on accident without realizing that they are for jazz?

Naaaa. This band tours all over the place. They all had nice looking gear. What's a jazz kit?

Smaller drums have different uses in comparison to larger drums. What kind of band were they?
Also, with smaller drums (and less of them), setting up is quicker, and things like drum heads are cheaper to obtain.
Hope i can help:)

Usually a jazz set has smaller drums.
I looked up jazz kits and that's exactly what they had. They were pretty much an indie band so maybe they didn't need a standard kit for technical drumming.

It was probably a jazz/traveling kit.

Technical Drumming? So basically, those who use a jazz kit, arn't technical drummers, and have no technique?
Like someone else said, go hang yourself.

Was it simply a 4-piece kit?
i.e. just a snare, bass, and two toms? Ya know, toms, the things sticking out of the bass and sitting to the drummer's right.
Oh, and some cymbals.

smaller drums = lighter load = easy to setup = better fo gigging
when you say small what do you mean? how small we talking? like bongo small or what, was probably just a studio kit or sumthing....

Setup of a 4-piece with 4 cymbals is nowhere near the length of an 11-piece with 15 cymbals.
Plus, if the kit's fusion, it's even smaller.

Dude, shut up. I still can't get over how you wanted to buy a DW kit and you had only played like 5 months. Stop acting like you are some God on here...please.
And to the thread starter, just give us the band or the drummers name.

i think you're generalizing on a few that you have seen. I'm not a big fan of indie music but all of the indie songs i've heard definetely use more than a three piece, and hte same with the indie bands i've played with.

Everyone wants a DW after 5 months. It's like when you start nearing the driving age, you wanna get a ferrari or a nice lotus.
