Synth Pads?

I was wondering what pads Akira Jiimbo uses. I realize there just normal pads, i just don't understand how he gets the melodic synth sounds out of it, rather than drum sounds.

You just choose another sound.

Through midi? or can you get it on the module?

he can load any sound he wants on to his module
then he plays the sounds through his 3 sound pads

he uses one of the Yamaha models, DTXtreme or something along those lines
