Bass Guitar Vs. Electric Guitar
Opinions on each and which do you think I should go for?
I'm thinking about bass because it would link into my drumming and also it will probably quicker to learn. I'm not looking to use this new "talent" in a band for a while at the moment but Im sure it will come in handy to help with either my current bassist or guitarist and I think if drums end up going downhill or I decide Im not getting anywhere in a band that I drum in, I will have a seperate instrument so I can play with a drummer rather be the drummer. You get me?
If not don't worry but still, what ideas do you have?
And have any of you here learnt bass or guitar?
Thanks all!

Try asking in the bass or guitar forums. What do we care?

If you're looking for something to help with your drumming or whatever, it's obvious to go bass. That's where the drums come from.
But seriously seriously. Why ask us?

Would you rather keep the beat, or play the rhythm? It's just that simple. They are really quite different instruments, take a look at what you like from the two and what you don't, easy.

Yeah learn both, personally I like bass more than guitar but I think they each have their own uses.

i would go for bass because it would be easier because your a drummer and because you already have good rhythm. in my experience i have also noticed that there arnt as many bassists as there are guitarists...
but what do i know? lol

I play both, i started playing bass first, then guitar. Bass is easier. Depends what you want. I started on bass because it did have a closer link to drumming, but also i jsut loved the sound of bass and loved bassists, dont me wrong i love guitar too, but i chose bass because in many rock bands the bassists get the least ammount of attention, so i was like ooh, il show them. haha thats kind ofa stupid reason though. Now that i have guitar, ive been focusing on that more, but mainly because i want to get better and im more satisfied with what i can do on bass.
I dont know, guitar is more of a spotlight instrument, bass is a little different and more unique because so many ppl play guitar.

I would sugget guitar because it's fun and it's melody (a total different approach but still a lot of connection with drumming on some level)...

Actually no.
Any musical instrument will improve your drumming and your musical culture.E.g In the school I went to, you were obliged to start learning the piano as soon as you finished your third year of studying drums.
and TS it isn't easier learning how play the bass. It's equally (if not more) difficult than learning how to play the guitar.
But I'd suggest the bass.I adore it as an instrument and for me good bass player=tough to find plus good bass player=good musician
I personally am gonna learn how to play Sax

come on...
Learn an instrument to express yourself musically. Not so you can play in a band cause your don't a gutarist, or whatever dumb reason i just read..
If you can't decide and don't feel a geniune impluse to want to learn that instrument and express yourself with it. Then don't.

Well of course they ALL help, but in your generic little garage band of 3, the bass connects more with the drums than the guitar, no?

yeah it connects.but so what?connection doesn't have to do with improving.
Learning bass will definetely improve your drumming.but learning the guitar will do the same.
I imagine it like a big(infinite)pie.By learning bass you will take a piece of that pie(better/killer rhythm section).Learning the guitar will have the same result only this time you will be picking a different piece(how to make a guitar solo/part better).
Different instrument=Different piece of pie(all equal though)
(I hope you are getting my point) cheers.

I think I'm going to take up some guitar. My best friend plays guitar and always asks for my insight. I give it to him, but I would like to understand the instrument more so I can feel like my opinions have more value.

Why ask us?
Because I want to ask drummers what their opinions are about which insturments help.
If you can't decide and don't feel a geniune impluse to want to learn that instrument and express yourself with it. Then don't.
I would like to learn them both but I have to choose. So I was looking for help from here.

I want to express myself musically, hence the reason I want to play another. But if I can't get in a band as a drummer, I would try as a bassist. It wouldn't just be so I can be in a band. It would also help with GCSE Music because I could play bother bass and drums and record both (obviously not at the same time)
Thanks for everyone who gave positive input.

I'd recommend bass. I've been playing guitar for a few months and I find it really difficult compared to drums. I started playing bass a while after I started guitar and I think I've come much further with bass than I have with guitar.

If that's because you can't afford both guitar and bass. Buy a guitar. You can learn the basics of bass on guitar but not the other way around.

Eh. Personally, I still think bass is cooler.
Even if a lot of bassists are stoners. It's just a cool instrument.
I'd probably have at least tried to learn to play it if it didn't take me 3 fingers to hold down 1 string.

I'd go with guitar, just because it works so well on its own.
also because if you're a decent guitarist you'll be able to get the basics of bass easier.

Bass, but thats my opinion.
You should really be asking yourself which one you want to learn. Not us

Whatever you want. I know 3 instruments good and learning a 4th. Drums, tuba(which I hate for the most part) guitar and learning clarinet.
I would pick guitar because I always felt the need to play a melodic instrument.

I want to play in a big afrobeat orchestra someday. What instrument would I have to learn?
Also, you should get a P bass if you want that low-end bow ba bow now
Ethan.

Not true, if your looking to learn theory go with bass since you need to outline the changes. Playing punk bass isn't really bass what they do(I'm almost sure) is lets say a band has 3 guitarists they realize that one of them needs to switch to bass and the worse one switches to bass and plays the same thing as the guitars exept for the power chords.

That's one of my reasons to play. There are loads of guitar players, a fair amount of drummers but you don't often come accross a bass player.

What type of bassist? Jazz bassists are like near impossible to come across but find some kid that plays guitar and tell him to learn bass and he'll do it. He won't be very good but he'll do it.
