If you can't figure something out by ear, your not at a level to play it.

Most of them aren't getting enough money. A lot of that money is going to the record companies and its probably the record companies pushing the RIAA to take on the tab sites.

Tabs aren't really a big deal for drums. Drum patterns are easier to figure out by ear than guitar or bass patterns.

I'd have to disagree...

I could never work out the chorus to Eriatarka by The Mars Volta, quite tricky on the ear with its speed and all that... sounded impossible.

But i posted on here a while back asking if anybody had a tab or notation of it for me to try and get ym head around it, no doubt somebody came up with this tab for me!

I printed it off and within 10 minutes i had the part down like i had written it myself! It was easily well within my playing boundries! sometimes people just need an extra bit of stimulation, a fresh source to help them along. it has nothing to do with their paying abilities

I think you should learn to use the search function.

www.911tabs.com

I don't get why everyone hates on tabs, as long as they are not depended on. If I want to play a certain song I like, I'll just look up the tab as opposed to taking the time to transcribe a song I have an itch to play. It's not that I can't transcribe the song, because most of the time I'm fully able to, it's that I find it nice to be able to make a 2 minute search, click print and play along, as opposed to having to sit down with a sheet of music and pencil and listening to the song over and over again. Now, if I were to do a serious cover of a song and it needed to be perfect, I would correct any tab to make it 100% or transcribe it myself.

TS there's already a thread about this that counts at least 3 pages...

I'm fine with it.....now maybe drummers will learn to develop and use their ears to figure things out.

yeah, tabs (especially drum tabs) haven't been around that long, what did everybody do before then?

I usually just figure out a song by ear. You eventually develop listening skills that are needed. It's better to develop these skills and be able to do it yourself. I must admit I have used tabs once or twice and it's not going to kill you, but we don't needs tabs really.

Hmm. That's frankly not true.

At all.

With a tab you can learn a piece note-for-note, learn it as slow as you like then speed it up until you'ore at the correct tempo.

And what about sight reading? A friend and college tutor of mine tends not to be able to work out everything he plays beforehand, as most of the pieces he plays are incredibly technical.

Give him 60 seconds or less with the sheet music, and he'll play it like he wrote it.

But yeah, it sucks they closed MX again  . But haven't there already been a few threads on this topic? Maybe this is the first one in D&P.
