iv modded guitars and fixed guitars, Now i want to build one from nothing.
However i need to know a few things...
1) I want to use purple heart for the body and neck then Ebony(sp) for the fingerboard, ROUGHLY how much will this be?
2)What kind of tools will i need?(i want to make a body that is SIMMILAR to an SG with a bit of my own style)
3) What kind of paint/stain/whatever should i use so the purple heart will stay purpleish?
4)How much more difficult is it to make a 12 string VS a 6string?
5) can people suggest the actual parts beside wood(tuners, bridge,PUP's,etc.)
6)Im thinking a Tune o matic(sp) with stopbar, good or bad idea?
7) in your openion do you think this will look good?
thanks, anything else you would like to add would be MUCH apreciated, and i have already looked at project guitar and all that fun stuff, id just like someone to flat out answer my questions... THANKS:p

1) Purpleheart is about $5 per 4/4 boardfoot (144 square inches, ~1" thick). Ebony, depending on the variety, is $70-$100 for a boardfoot. The blacker, the more expensive.
2) If you find the "Luthiery FAQ" there is a whole section on tools.
3) You can use, nitrocellulose, polyurethane, tung oil, etc.
4) The only real differences are a) the headstock has to be 2x as big (unless you make it like a Rickenbacker, which is a bit trickier) You also have to have more reinforcement in the neck, because theres 2x as many strings.
5) Schaller, Hipshot and Grover make good tuners. Schaller and Hipshot make nice bridges. Tonepros also makes a VERY good TOM bridge.
6) Decent idea. Just remember, there usually has to be a slight angle to the neck for a TOM to work right (because its so high up. w/o a neck angle, the action would be a mile high by the end of the neck)
7) sure. why not?

theres two different types of truss rods theres a normal truss rod and theres a bi-flex truss rod this 1 has two of them inside the neck so you can imagine that the have double the strength as the other truss rods

Actually, your best bet for increasing the strength of your neck would be to use steel or carbon fibre rods in addition to whatever truss rod you use. The double-action rod described above is a better choice, imo.

those are some diagrams showing the use of extra reinforcement. #2 is what youre looking for.
Im not sure about the 12-string TOM, look around. Google it.
Before I can answer the neck angle question, what type of neck joint will this be? bolton? set? or through?

I was actually thinking of an SG(ish) shape so the basic shape of an SG with slight variance
EDIT:Realizing how large the 12string TOM is has just popped another question into my mind... ROUGHLY how wide would my neck have to be?

That sounds pretty sweet man. Love the sg shape.
The neck is prolly gonan be the same width as a regular neck. Check out the epiphone double neck sg. Or you could buy teh agile 12 string and like canibalize it by cutting a second horn and routing the body to look sgish.

odd that you mention that, origionally i was going to do that, then i fell in love with purple heart and decided id like to make a guitar from blocks of wood haha
P.S the SG shape is my all time favorite, hence my current guitar being a $3,500 SG
EDIT:some spelling corrections, thoo i gave up

Oh ya lol. Maybe what you can do is buy an epiphone lp special neck seeing as its bolt on, cut off part of the headstock and make 12 string headstock and then route out the body for that? Maybe the easiest method. At least you wont need to make a neck.

what?
sorry, but that really is just a dumb idea.
ts, set neck joints arent all that hard to make. the angle wouldnt be such a hard thing to do, either. do some research if you want, or come back with questions.
